Hi, am trying to trace my paternal great grandmother. She was born in Ayott St Peter, Hertfordshire around 1858.She married Robert PEAT in 1878 in County Durham. In all the census records she calls hersely Mary Jane, but her marriage certificate states her name as Mary Ann LORD otherwise MALIM. Her father is named John MALIM but the name Joeph L also appears and has been crossed out and signed by the registrar. I assume the L to mean Lord. It was written before it was realised that he wasn't her actual father. It also states ather is deceased. Its definitely the correct marriage certiicate for my relatives, but it's a real puzzler. I wonder if there is anyone who has come accross MALIMS in Hertfordshire, or indeed any varints on the name. She had to make her mark, so with her southern accent and inability to spell correctly there are lots of margins for error on the recording of her name by the registrar!
