Thankyou Bookbox for both  explanations. Reading the abbreviation as meaning 'imperfect' makes sense. Also with the link to the information about hard labour I now realise that it was as part of being in jail. I had somehow got it into my head that it was instead of a custodial sentence.
Appreciate your help.

Wales / Understanding court documents from 1890

The attached is from 'The Swansea Prison: Nominal Registers: Men 1890-1893' on Ancestry.
I wonder if anyone can help me understand the abbreviations?

Under the column for 'Education' what I think says 'Iwp' - it may of course say something else and I have not read it correctly!

Also, under the column for 'Sentence' - does HL stand for hard labour? If so any ideas what this might consist of in 1890 Wales?

Thanks for reading

The Common Room / Re: Find My Past Subscription

I do agree LizzieL - it's annoying to to see others being offered a better discount. I don't know how FindMyPast think that is good for keeping customers on side.

I did check again what the charge would be and it says 12 month Premium 159.99 which included a 20% discount. Underneath that info panel is a banner which says 'All 12 month subscriptions receive a 15% discount'. All very confusing.

My subscription only recently expired so maybe that makes a difference - but it's not clear and does seem unfair to loyal customers. I too have been a member for many years.

Thankyou Sandra for forwarding that string of posts.
I now have a plan!  Having cancelled  FindMyPast a couple of weeks ago I  shall wait for a while to see if their discount is increased. I do already have Ancestry at the reduced rate from one of your links so shall keep myself busy with that.

I am being quoted £159 to re-join Find My Past, there is a note to say this included 20% discount.  Are there any other extra current discounts that people are aware off?

Thanks for your swift reply rosie99. I hadn't realised that there was such a gap but will do as you suggest and use FreeBMD

The Common Room / GRO birth records

It is a while since I've used the GRO site and I  am trying to search for births in the 1950's. When I go on the pull down arrow to select the year of birth the selection of years in the list stops at 1934 and restarts at 1954. Is this a temporary or have I made a mistake?

Thankyou MollyC - the explanation you have given makes sense. I remember my own mum being very reluctant to go into a particular hospital because its name was still, in her mind, connected to the workhouse she had remembered as a child. It had been transformed inside but from the outside still looked grim.
I can see now that by 1939 the childnren's home in Rotherham may well have been very dispersed from the list I had originally found which showed homes in 1933.

I can see now - looking at the maps attached by MollyC how there might be sections within  such enormous accommodation that would be set aside for children's care.

The site on Alma Road is huge! Looking at the maps, it makes it easy to see just how close many of the  addresses, identified as Children's homes, were actually quite close together. Also the Doncaster Road home is actually named as a Children's home.

KGarrad - thanks for the update of the change of location from Alma Road. I guess public buildings were always being re-purposed as needs changed. Thanks everyone
