Galway / Which Court of Petty Sessions, Galway ?
« on: Wednesday 07 April 21 16:00 BST (UK)  »
Thomas Augustine O'Rourke (b. in Leeds 1864) worked in Galway for the Marconi company from about 1907/1908. He married Maria Madden in Oct 1909 in Clifden. I have been told that Maria left the family home at one point and with the help of her brother took away a sewing machine and possibly other items. Her husband took her to court on Dec 7th 1914 and she brought a counter claim against him for desertion and neglect of his wife and children. My problem is that I don't know which court would have heard this case. Thomas's working address was Derrygimla. Maria came from Ballinaboy. So any ideas which Petty Sessions heard the case?
Grateful, as ever, for any help.

The Married Quarters database creation for the Curragh Camp is terrific. I am trying to update the story of the life of my deceased Uncle, Larry O'Rourke . He was a Captain in 1945 and lived in No. 3 Connolly Villas with his wife, Mary Esther ( Etta). According to the data they lived at this address from 4.8.1945-12.8.1964.  After Larry's name are the letters P.I.T - what do they stand for, please?

Is it possible to know where the couple moved to after this?

I have also noticed a reference to someone I think is my father, James O'Rourke.  This person is down as  A/CPL O'Rourke J (no.3 Band) and appears to have been living  in married quarters from 01.04.1930-05.12.1933 but no wife's name is given or where on the site.  Of course, it may not be my father at all but I'd like to know what no 3 band means and whether A/CPL means acting corporal?

Returning to my Uncle, I have tried for many months to find his date and place of death. His remaining family have lost reference to it . Is there a way for me to trace it?  I believe that my Uncle received a number of promotions, as my father was very proud of him and mentioned this, but I have no idea what these were or even when he left the Army. Would any one on this site know?

I'd be grateful for any help. Many thanks for reading this.

In reply #3, I posted a birth and added a death for that child.

Here is 1911 census, with the second David
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Inn_s_Quay/Mountjoy_Prison_Cottages__Male/18187/

Here is the correct  1903 birth which fits with the marriage certificate

Thank you. Frances and David had a son they named Humphrey so it was obviously a family name. I had no idea David's father was in the prison service, so that's a new find. It's also interesting to discover that there were two Davids. Thank you for all this information.

Dublin / Trying to locate death date for my aunt
« on: Sunday 07 March 21 18:11 GMT (UK)  »
My aunt, Frances Catherine O'Rourke, was born in Ballinaboy, Clifden, Galway in 1916 to Thomas Augustine O'Rourke and Maria Madden. Frances moved to Dublin in her youth and I was told she had an upholstery business but I don't know where. She married in Dublin David Harnett (b.1913 in Youghal) who, I have been told, owned some grocery shops. Again, I don't know. I was led to believe that members of the Harnett family are still involved in the grocery business in Dublin. It would be good to know anything relating to them.  I am trying to find death dates for my Aunt Frances and for her husband. They were married in Sept 1939 in Dublin North. They had eight children, the last born in 1955.
I am also hoping that someone in the family may also be researching and if so they might know the death date and death place of my Grandfather, Thomas Augustine O'Rourke, born Leeds 1864, engineer, who worked in Dublin and later for Marconi in Galway.  Any information gratefully received. Thanks.

Tipperary / Trying to establish great grandmother
« on: Thursday 04 February 21 18:33 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather was Thomas Quin(n) born 16 November 1860 Grange, Monsea, Tipperary.  He died in 1918 in Tipperary. His children were:
Elizabeth (1883-1957); William (1885-1971); Mary (1887-1961); James (1889-1969) and Ellen (1891-1921)
I think his parents were James Quinn and Eliza Hogan but I cannot firmly establish the name of his wife. I have the name Mary Doran but also the name Mary Fanning.
I believe he was a widower when he died.
His daughter Ellen was my grandmother. She was the wife of Martin Nevin about whom I have already been given much information from you lovely people on Roots Chat.
Can anyone help with the name of his wife or indeed any information regarding him? He was an agricultural labourer and illiterate according to one census return.
Thanks.
