Essex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: samuel harris b 1822 Thorpe, Essex

Hi Valerie
There is no record of a baptism for a Samuel Harris at the Anglican Church at Thorpe le Soken that I could find for the year you give, I searched 5 years either side of this date and lots of Harris's but no Samuel.
The only Harris baptism that is around that year is for a Mary Harris, daughter of Robert & Elizabeth Harris, Robert's occupation is a Labourer, the baptism took place in 1819.

I checked for marriages of a Samuel Harris as well but no luck there either. There is a Baptist Church at Thorpe le Soken so it is possible your Samuel was baptised there.

I will keep a look out for Samuel and if I find anything I will let you know as I'm also researching the Harris family from Thorpe le Soken

Hi Jean,

The Mary Emma Amelia Hutchinson shown on the IGI as b. 24 Feb 1824 and chr 18 Apr 1824 at St Leonards has parents William and Ann Hutchinson.  Does that match with your findings?  The gap between birth and christening is not too great considering the time of year and perhaps mum and or babe were not too strong.

Hi Nanny Jan
Yes this does match with my finding from the film for the Parish register for the Mary Emma Amelia chr at St Leonards which is where I got the abode for the family from. There seemed to be quite a few baptisms (for other families) on the film that happened weeks after the babies were born and families travelled from other parishes to have their babies baptised. I am wondering if this is the case with Mary's baptism. I checked on the LDS site as to what films are available for St Johns at Hackney and it seems that no baptisms were performed there in 1824 or there is no films of them if there was. As the parish of Homerton was spawned in 1846 it is possible that they lived in the area that became Homerton and that would make the place of birth on the 51 census correct add to that the Christian names certainly match, the year of birth matches just not the fathers name.
As Holywell Lane is on the edge of the Shoreditch parish I'm wondering if some people may have classified it as part of Homerton and other saw it as Shoreditch which according the links for maps posted it is clearly on the edge of Shoreditch.
I'm feeling like I'm going round in circles with this one  :( oh well it could be worse I may not have found what I have and have no information to work with.

I have found Mary on the 1841 & 1851 Census, on the 51 census she gives her place of birth at homerton, from her age on the census and also her death certificate she was born approximately 1824. She married in 1853 and came to australia in 1854.

I have no details for siblings as on the census she was working as a servant for 41 and 51.

Being named Mary Emma Amelia Hutchinson you would think she would stand out but she was know to change the christian names around as per my grandmother's marriage certificate on which she has Amelia Mary Emma as her christian names (I have the original marriage certificate for my grandmother)

St Leonards Parish Registers at Shoreditch have a Mary Emma Amelia brn and chr 1824 althought the date of birth is February 1824 and the chr is April 1824 so if they had to travel for the chr  then this would suggest this could be her and I suspect this may be her but I need to be sure.

It's just one of those frustrating ones unfortunately and I live in regional NSW Australia so I don't have access to the records at the LMA which I think I need to check first.

The baptism took place at St Leonards Shoreditch.

What is concerning me is that the person this is about claims on the 51 census that she was born at Homerton.
