Occupation Interests / Re: Hawker of pots/earthenware

Hello
Hopefully, I can give you some ideas to help you on your way.
The parish of St Bees covered a very large area which includes the town of Whitehaven.
Gins is an area of Whitehaven and was the site of the Whitehaven pottery.
The Gins pottery was established in 1819 by Sir William Lowther who leased it to Woodnorth, Harrison, and Hall. There may have been an earlier pottery on the same site.
It is possible that your ancestors may have manufactured pottery, but I would suggest this is not so.
Someone described as a "Potter"  at that time, was usually a Traveller or Gypsy, and this is more likely.
Try joining the Facebook group "Cumberland Travelling Families" I'm sure someone there may be able to help

There's no reason, I was just giving you the option in case you preferred it.
Cunningham is definitely a Travelling family name in the area you mention.
They intermarried often into my ancestors
Researching them isn't easy, but once you understand their lives it does get easier.
Most lived a semi-nomadic sort of life, traveling roughly April to October and wintering with family and/or other travelers in houses barns outbuildings, or tents.
Children were born on the road but baptised in churches they liked. Often several years would go by before they were baptised. This is the reason why later when they appear on census you get discrepancies. Generally speaking, they were all baptised, you just have to find them. If you know when they were baptised you can research matkets that were on at that time of year and loo in parishes around them.
Marriages aren't quite as easy to find but generally, they are there somewhere. Northern travelling people preferred to marry at places like Gretna Green. There were around 20 different places along the Scottish borders where these irregular marriages took place, unfortunately not many are easily available.
Another important thing to remember is the vast majority were illiterate. When you search their names, try as many different spellings as you can, this often gets results.
The Cunninghams were well-known scallywags, I would almost bet you'll find info in newspapers, criminal records,  etc.

Thanks for that
Unfortunately, parish registers don't give burial plot numbers. They confirm that Ann is there and give the dates of death & burial, but I'm trying to locate exactly where she is.

Cumberland / Holm Cultram, The last resting place of Ann Hutchinson
« on: Sunday 20 June 21 21:55 BST (UK)  »
Ann Hutchinson was buried at Holm Cultram on February 15th, 1848.
I'm trying to locate her burial plot.
I'm aware that a fire in 2006 destroyed burial plot records, but I wondered if copies were held anywhere else, or if anyone employed there prior to 2006 may remember if there was a headstone or anything that might help me.
Thanks in advance

Researching travelling families is a work of art, they were very suspicious of authority and often gave wrong information on YOB of POB, if in fact they ever knew it.
I've been researching this area for years, PM me and I'll point you in the right direction

I'll need your e mail to send documents to you, PM me
I would guess that the reason your 3G and 2G uncles have Winter as a middle name, is because one of their parents was married to a Winter girl, so you need to work out all the girls full names

I've searched Cumbria, Westmorland and National archives, no transcript there.
I have a copy of the newspaper report on the case, which is very detailed.
It gives information (names) of Robert Winters brother and father which can be used to start a tree
