Shropshire Lookup Requests / Re: A will in an Oswestry Parish Register
« on: Monday 25 September 17 04:04 BST (UK)  »
Hello
This has been found in the Shropshire Parish Record. St Asaph Dioscese Vol 4. - the 1616 will of Hugh Yale.
A couple of things of interest/confusion, some relevant just to Shropshire:
 - 1) There is another arrangement of the St Asaph Diocese registers on Archive.org.  Apart from the full volume [Shropshire Parish Record. St Asaph Dioscese Vol 4, which goes to 1669] there is another version that I initially found which is titled [Shropshire Parish Record. St Asaph Dioscese Vol 4 Part 1] which only goes to 1593.
- 2) Cannot identify where ancestry gets the title "Register of Haiston.--Burials. (Burial)" from, but all the records from the Oswestry Register [St Asaph] as under this title
- 3) Google searching on copied text from within the register does not find the document in archive.org!! [never encountered this one before - google searches will list the google books copy in preference to the archive.org copy but I have always had searches identify the book previously, this is not, i.e. search on "Dauid Yale" does not yield the register as a result]
Thank you all for your time & effort
Glenn

Hello
Sorry Gadget I did not see your post before I posted mine.  I have checked the Whittington/Halston book, it is only from 1690ish and has very few entries.
A search in Ancestry on place Shropshire and the text Haiston produces 28,000 records, all seem to have the text “Book:    Register of Haiston.--Burials. (Burial).”  This is many more records than ever was in Halston.  The first 311 records do not have any date, the 312th starts at 1558 and is a burial.  The undated records are mostly headings and notations but some are identifiable, such as
Text:    Mr. Walter Griffiths of Llanvechan in the Countie of Montgymery & Mrs. Mary Davenport of Osswaldstree maried. Book:    Register of Haiston.--Burials. (Burial) Collection:    Shropshire: Oswestry - Parish Registers, St. Asaph Diocese –
Which is identifiable as the 1665 Oswestry marriage in the Select Marriages dataset
Name:    Mary Mrs Davenport Gender:    Female Marriage Date:    Jul 1665 Marriage Place:    Oswestry,Shropshire,England Spouse:    Walter Griffiths.
The dated records from 1558 match what is in the Oswestry register on Archive.org, with some entries missing, [ie Nov 1558 has only 3 of the 8 entries from the Oswestry Register].
So it seems it is likely taken the Oswestry register available on archive.org.  It is not in the first volume which covers 1558 to 1593, so I will try the subsequent volumes on archive.org later today [Oz time], and will repost my findings in about 12 hours.

Thank you all for your responses.
Dr David Yale was appointed Prebendary of St. Asaph 1578.  He was later the Bishop of Chester. Yale University in New Haven is named after his great-grandson.
I did not think about the wills of Prerogative Court of Canterbury being available on ancestry so I will check these for each year until his death in 1626 [one year at a time] to see if I can identify the will. If not I will then contact the Shropshire & Aberystwyth archives.
Thanks
Glenn

Hello
In the dataset on ancestry "All Shropshire, England, Extracted Church of England Parish Records" there is an entry that is a will transcript that is undated and that does not contain the name of the deceased.  I am trying to ascertain the date and whose will it is.  The item can be found on ancestry searching, with no date, the place Oswestry, Shropshire, on the the terms Evance or Yale.
The transcript available and record details on Ancestry are:
Item I giue and bequeath all that mesuage house or Burgage & garden adioyninge to the Churchyarde of Oswestry comonlie called Y ty or Tyddyn in y Fonwent and all that my Cottage comonly called Bullen wthall that my Crofte beinge betweene the Chappell Fieldes aforsaid and the House mille late of John Lloyd Esquier and also the reu'sion of all that my house and garden nowe in the possession of Robert ap Edward glou' adioyninge to the Schoole house of Oswestrie to Dauid Yale Doctor of the Lawe John Edwards of Chirke Thomas Powell of The Parke Esquiers Richard Evance of Trefelech gent and to their heires for eu' To the vse of the poore of the towne of Oswestrie aforsaid for eu' (viz) to be by them together wth the Baieliefs and ou'seers of the poore of the said towne of Oswestry for the tyme beinge or the greater number of them sett and lett at and for such yearely rent as the same shalbe yeerely worth ou' and besides the repacon thereof and the same yearlye rent to be by them or the greater number of them in and upon 01 Jan yearely and publickly imployd and bestowed upon such of the poore people of the said Towne of Oswestry as in their iudgement and conscience shall stand in most neede thereof And neu'thelesse my will is that if any preacher lawfully licenced doe upon the said day yearlie make one sermon in the Welshe tonge in the said pishe Church of Oswestrie then he shall haue and receave for the same yearely sixe shillings eyght pence to be deducted from and out of the said yearly rents of the last recited p'mises Provided neu'thelesse and my further will is that if the said David Yale John Edwards Thom's Powell Richard Evance and theire heires wth the Bayliefs and ou'seers aforsaid be remisse in doinge and p'forminge of the said Will & meaninge touchinge the imploynge of the yearlie rents aforsaid to be issuinge out and from the same That then and from the tyme that they shall first break or after the same I doe give and bequeath the same to such of my kyn male or female as shall be then lyvinge and to his or her heires and assignes for cu' &c

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Re: Nottingham Workhouse, 1860ish - 1863

Hello NG
Have not seen any reference to Cowens before, I have checked a little, no Brady/Cowan marriages or Brady/Cowan maiden [& vice versa] visible.  There is a Michael Cowan, born 2 years after Joseph Cowen, who shows on the 1861 Nottingham census as from Ireland but I cannot find any sensible Irish birth for him, let alone for him & Joseph as brothers!
Still I will keep them in mind on my Irish searches.  Which I may say have so far been almost completely unsuccessful.  Has anyone actually had much success with Irish searching?

Hello NG
Thank you.
Looking for Michael's wife Elizabeth I thought I had checked all the deaths, including the GRO with ages for the 1850s deaths, obviously I hadn't, a senior moment of my own!
For young Mary I did have the GRO record copied, but the GRO record shows the age as 9 rather than 9 months.  She was christened Mary Slater (living with Joseph Slater on 1861 census) with her mother showing as Elizabeth Allen (she married Martin Allen in 1852), and buried as Mary Ann Brady, with her mother recorded under her maiden name as a single woman!!
Again thanks
Glenn

NG
Thank you, is really appreciated.
I cannot identify the 1852 death, in freebmd there is only a record for Catherine Brady and she does also shows on GRO with an age of 1.
Any information to help "fill out" the family would be appreciated.
Thanks
Glenn

Thanks for getting back so quickly Rosie.
I am in Australia and cannot get to the Notts archive myself.
I provided all the information I have as:
 - I have no better idea about when Michael Brady was admitted other than sometime between the 1851 census and the 1861 census.
 - I have no idea whether his wife Elizabeth was admitted, &, if she was, whether she was discharged or whether she died in the workhouse.
 - I have no idea whether Michael was discharged before he died in December 1863.
 - I have no idea what level of detail is included in the admissions & discharges & whether it would include the Irish town as well as county where he was born or lived.
I didn't specify just the admissions/discharges as I am not aware of the format - if he was in for a number of years is the discharge shown with the admission or as a separate entry? etc.  There is also a rather ominous "etc." at the end of the list of records, so I was hoping someone with knowledge would rule out possible entries in the "etc." records.
Thanks
Gelnn

Nottinghamshire Lookup Requests / Nottingham Workhouse, 1860ish - 1863

Hello
I am seeking any information on g-g-g-grandfather Michael Brady who is recorded as a resident of the Nottingham workhouse on the 1861 census.  On this census his place of birth is given as Meath [indexed as Meash] Ireland.
Michael died in 1863, buried St Barnabus R. C. church 31 December 1863.
On the 1851 census Michael is recorded in Nottingham as a 51 year old with wife Elizabeth & 3 teenage children.
I have been unable to identify any further information on Michael or his wife Elizabeth.  There is a death of an Elizabeth Brady recorded in Nottingham in 1855 but GRO index shows the age as 0 and this is not her.
Any information would be appreciated, but a main item is his place of birth, which presumably was recorded [the managers had it to provide to the census takers], and I am hoping is more than just the parish of Meath.
Thank you
Glenn
