Oxfordshire / Re: Hercules Hastings - Burford, Oxfordshire. Died 1731
« on: Tuesday 26 June 18 23:35 BST (UK)  »
I have also posted on the Oxfordshire Family History Face Book Page, and mistakenly on the new member board of Roots Chat, just in case you're wondering if you've already seen it.

Looking for help finding a birth record for HERCULES HASTINGS. Hercules died March 1731 in Burford. His 4 daughters born between 1699 and 1706 were also born in Burford. No other Hastings baptized in Burford from 1630 through to 1690 (I checked the parish register line by line) so it is clear that he is from somewhere else.
Another Hercules Hastings, connected to the family in Daylesford, was well renowned for his clock-making. He was in Burford for many years and famously created the church clock. He was born 1598. Given the similar, unusual name, and the connection to Burford, I feel certain that they are related but a generation or two apart.
There has been a lot of work done in various Ancestry trees connecting the Daylesford Hastings back to William the Conquerer. I haven’t validated any of that yet but for obvious reasons would like to connect my Hercules to the family if I can. Try as I might though, I can find no baptism anywhere for my Hercules.

Tax roles indicate that the elder Hercules paid taxes in Surrey, Berkshire and Oxfordshire over the years and he was buried in Daylesford.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Travelling People / Comedian Frank Mortimore England 1892
« on: Wednesday 20 January 16 00:36 GMT (UK)  »
I have just discovered the name of my grandmother's (out of wedlock) father.  His occupation is noted as Comedian on her birth certificate. He never cohabitated with my great grandmother and may well have been just passing through.   I'm trying to figure out where to go in getting more info on him.

Name: Frank Mortimore (or perhaps Mortimer).
We know that he was in Plymouth, Devon in 1892 but could potentially be from anywhere.

I have been combing through census records to find someone with that occupation, having cast a fairly wide net in terms of birthdate and anywhere in England.  I found one who identified himself as a Traveller.  Not sure what that is or whether a comedian would use that term.  Not sure where else to look.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The Common Room / Re: 1939 register help please

So. I'm not losing my mind...none of them are there!  The suggestions you made don't pan out with any of the family facts.

I guess my investment in the 1939 register was for naught.  Disappointing after all the hype.

Thank you everyone who poked around to help though.

The Common Room / 1939 register help please
« on: Tuesday 10 November 15 03:39 GMT (UK)  »
I am beyond frustrated with the register.  I purchased the 5 record subscription and wasted 2 opening up what I thought were the right records only to find that they aren't.  Three left but I can't find a single person I am searching for.  I am doing a variety of broad searches...like last name and Wiltshire, last name and birth year, etc. I even looked at every Louisa in Wiltshire and even searched just by a birthdate.

If anyone has been having success with their searches, are you able to help me?

I am looking for William (Bill) HERBERT and Louisa HERBERT and Ceridwen LEWIS.  I know that they moved from Abertridwr, Glamorgan to Corsham, Wiltshire around 1937.  They were definitely there before 1939. I don't have an address for them and they may or may not all have been living in one house. Also present with the Herberts would be a Gladys Herbert born 1917.

William Herbert born  February 1875.
Louisa Herbert (previous married name Davies) born 17 April 1882
Ceridwen Lewis (nee Davies) born January 7, 1903

I believe Corsham is in the Chippenham registration district.

Any help would be gratefully received.

WWII In Memoriam / Lewis, William David. Prisoner of War- Ballale Island Massacre
« on: Wednesday 28 October 15 02:32 GMT (UK)  »
In memory of my grandfather who died as a prisoner of war in the horrific Ballale Island Massacre in the South Pacific.  Approximately 600 men from various Royal Artillery units were taken from Changi Prison after the fall of Singapore.  About 500 of those men were eventually moved to Ballale Island  to build an airstrip for the Japanese.  As the tides of war changed, the order was given to dispose of all the remaining prisoners.  They were massacred on March 5, 1943 and left in mass graves.  Not one sprisoner survived.

My grandfather was a coal miner from Glamorganshire in Wales who had moved his family to Corsham, Wiltshire before he was called to the Royal Artillery.  He left behind his wife and 2 young children.

Rest in peace William (Will) Lewis and know that you are remembered.

Glamorganshire / Re: Isaac Lewis - Ruddry - I'm stumped and could use a hand
« on: Sunday 18 October 15 21:43 BST (UK)  »
Thank you both for your help.  The mystery isn't solved but you've certainly given me something to try working through.  It is likely that the first born girl would have her mother's name so siblings named Ann and Amelia make sense.  One has to wonder why they would both be in Rhydyboithan if the parents had back to Merthyr.  I guess they had found posts and stayed with the work.

Thanks again!

Glamorganshire / Isaac Lewis - Ruddry - I'm stumped and could use a hand
« on: Sunday 18 October 15 00:27 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
I am looking for the ancestors of Amelia Lewis baptized Oct 6 1822 in Ruddry.  The daughter of Isaac and Ann Lewis, OTP.  His occupation listed as collier.

I can't find Amelia or her family in 1841.  She was in service in Rhydybyddin in 1851 and married in Caerphilly by 1853.

I can't find any record of Isaac and Ann in Ruddry area.  There are a few Isaacs in Merthyr Tydfil but the one I thought was interesting, marrying an Ann Davies in 1820, was an iron miner.  I don't know, did they work in both industries?

Any help in tracking down other viable Isaacs or helping me prove or disprove this one, would be appreciated.

Thanks!
