Can't see these missing records flagged anywhere so thought I'd post on here in case it's helpful for anyone.

amondg thank you!! I can't work out how my searches missed this so I'm very grateful to you.

I've gone through the rest of the images for baptisms at St Matthew Newington to look for the other children and noticed that a large number of pages are missing from the scans and are not indexed. I wish I had spotted this before I went down to the London Metropolitan Archives last week - I suspect my relatives will be recorded in the missing pages.

Oh well, not for far away from London so I suppose I'll plan another trip.

Hi Jennifer - I have the GRO birth data already, looking for parish records of baptisms.

4
Opps - yes, transcription error!

Alice Maud was born 1882.

Afternoon everyone.

I think I may either be missing something really obvious in terms of social history, or perhaps just looking in the wrong places, but I cannot find the parish baptism records for 6 out of 9 children born to John and Mary Ann Williams in St Saviour, Surrey between 1871-1892.

Elizabeth born 1874 St Saviour, Surrey
John Richard born 1876 St Saviour, Surrey
Frances Louise born 1878 St Saviour, Surrey
James Thomas born 1879 St Saviour, Surrey
Henry Charles born 1881 St Saviour, Surrey
Alice Maud born 1892 St Saviour, Surrey

There is another sibling, Mary Ann who was born in 1871 but registered in Lambeth and I haven't looked for her baptism record yet. In addition, I have found two other siblings' baptism records at St Mark Walworth (Jessie Beatrice 16 Aug 1892 and Florence Emily 27 May 1890) but after searching through the entire set of baptism records at St Mark Walworth from 1870 to 1900 I can't find any other matching or even partially-matching records. Census records show the family were living in Ash Street, Newington in 1871, Gurney Street in 1881 and North Street in 1891. John, the father, was a painter.

I've done wildcard searching in Ancestry for all possible matches across London but still nothing. I wondered if I am missing something really obvious, such as them being born in a workhouse with a chapel (so the baptism records would be separate from the parish records). Does anyone know of any gaps in the baptism records for Southwark? Could it be that they just weren't baptised? I can't believe they would be baptised as anything other than CofE so haven't looked at any RC records.

I'd be really grateful for pointers and next steps. Thank you!

World War One / Re: Londoner in the Northumberland Fusiliers c1917?

Thanks Rena, jim1, MaxD, and marcie dean for your responses.

Unfortunately the last relative who would have been able to confirm any facts died just before Christmas at age 103! I suspect you're right re no medal/card because he didn't serve abroad. I'll park this line of enquiry I think!

World War One / Londoner in the Northumberland Fusiliers c1917?
« on: Tuesday 13 February 18 21:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, this is my first post ever so please be patient if I have missed anything or am posting in the wrong place...!

I have just received a PDF birth certificate from the GRO for my great uncle Leslie James Williams, dated 29 April 1917 - see attached. His father, James Thomas Williams (born 24/10/1979), is listed as being a Private in the Northumberland Fusiliers. This is surprising not only as up until now we hadn't found any records of James Thomas serving in WW1 or at any other time but also because he, his father and his grandfather were all born in Bermondsey, London.

Does anyone know why a Londoner was serving with the Northumberland Fusiliers?

We have no family connection to that part of the world, and the tree so far sits firmly within the boundaries of the district of Southwark, London. It's definitely the correct birth certificate for the right person, so I wonder whether an error was made by the registrar who made the record? He is also listed as being a Warehouseman and we know this is correct.

I've done some light research using the medal rolls on Ancestry but with a name like this and no obvious connection to Northumberland, it's proving to be a bit difficult! Can anyone could help shed light on this?

Thanks in advance!
