My apologies!

By 'they' I was meaning Nathan Gadsdon and his wife Sybella. Their daughter to whom I was referring, would be Ann M Gadsdon, born circa 1850 in Chelsea, MDX according to the 1861 census.

I can find no obvious marriage record for Nathan and Sybella, and no birth or baptism record for Ann M. Also, no trace of Ann M after her appearance on the 1861 census.

I will do my best to be more clear in future!

Emma :)

Thank You so much for those finds!  ;D

I hadn't even thought to try Isabella as a variation! Still don't have a marriage for them or a birth or baptism record for their daughter. I wonder if they perhaps didn't marry at all!

Thus far in my research, I haven't found a baptism record for Josephine, born circa 1837.

All of my certainties regarding the baptisms are the London Church of England records which are available on Ancestry.

These records have given me the following:

Elizabeth Rose Gadsdon bp 10 Jan 1802, St Mary in Lambeth,

David Godsdon bp 26 Jan 1806, St Mary in Lambeth,

Charles Gadsdon, born 03 Apr 1808. Bp. 19 Jun 1808  Son of William, a painter of Chapel Yard, by Martha his wife. Christ Church, Spitalfields

Martha Gadsdon, born 02 Jan 1811, bp
14 Apr 1811, St Mary in Lambeth

Nathan Gadsdon, bp 21 Aug 1814, St Mary in Lambeth, Pa. William and Martha Gadson, Botanical Painter  White Hart Row

Helen Gadsdon  born 25 May 1817, bp 29 Jun 1817, St mary, Newington. Pa.  William and Martha Gadsdon, painter, Frederick Place

Emma Gadsdon, bp 21 July 1817, St Mary in Lambeth. Pa. William and Martha, Painter, Kennington

George Gadsdon, bp 17 Oct 1819, St Mary in Lambeth, Pa. William and Martha, painter, Kennington

Robert Gadsdon, bp 23 Jun 1822, St Mary in Lambeth  Pa. William and Martha Gadsdon, colourer  Kennington

Those are the baptisms for the children by William's first wife. Do you think I have two families mixed up? Those are the only baptisms I have found so far, for children of a William and Martha.

Will add the children from the second marriage in next message.

Emma :)

I believe all the earlier children were baptised at St Mary in Lambeth, also!

Thank You for your time! They are the trickiest of all my lines!

Elizabeth is indeed a widow in the 1841. William died just before the census was taken in May of 1841.

I'm just away to view those records you have found!

Hello :)

I've been trying to trace the siblings of my gt gt gt grandmother, and it has proven very tricky so far.

My gt gt gt grandmother, Georgiana Gadsdon, was baptised 4th Jan 1835, at St Mary's, Lambeth, Surrey. Her parents were William Gadsdon, a painter, and Elizabeth nee Lawley. Elizabeth was William's second wife.

Children I have found born to William and Elizabeth are:

Elizabeth 1826
Jemima 1830 d. 1830
Keziah 1830 d. 1830
William 1831
GEORGIANA 1835
Josephine 1836

Each of these baptisms has William's occupation as either a painter or a colourer.

William had previous children with his first wife, Martha Rose (1781-1824). The baptisms I have collected are as follows:

Elizabeth Rose 1802
David 1806
Charles 1808
Martha 1811
Helen 1817
Emma 1817
George 1819
Robert 1822

I believe Emma married a Walter Church and died in 1888.

All other Gadson siblings, I have been struggling with for a few years now.

I have followed Josephine Gadson on a few censuses, and know that she passed away near my gt gt gt grandmother in Huntingdonshire, in 1899.

My struggle is, that bar Emma and Josephine, and my own direct ancestor, I am struggling to locate any of the other siblings.

I think I have located Nathan/Nathaniel on the 1841, 1861 and 1871 censuses, but he is seeming very elusive. On the 1841 he is in the house of James Shaw, an accountant, living in St Mary, Lambeth and his occupation is listed as a print colorer. (HO 107/1058/5) His age is 25. This all seems to point to the correct man.

I can't find trace of him in 1851, even with lots of different spellings of the names.

In 1856, he is listed in the City and County directory as Nathan Gadsdon, Print Colorer, 9 Wine Office Court, Fleet Street.

By 1861, he appears to be enumerated as Nathan Gadsden aged 56, a print colorer, born on the British Channel! He has a wife, Sybella aged 34  born Chelsea, MDX, and a daughter, Ann M aged 11, also born Chelsea, MDX. Thet are living at 10 Gough Square, St Dunstan, MDX. (RG 9/219)

By 1871, they are at the same address, but Nathan is now Matthew Gadsden. His age is 66 and he is a print colorer, born Lambeth. Sybil is there, aged 42. No sign of the daughter, Ann M. (RG 10/424)

I have an electoral register for 1887, of Nathan Gadson living at 11 Stanhope Street. But I cannot find him, his wife, or daughter on the 1881 census.

The workhouse admission records on Ancestry, show that Nathaniel Gadston was admitted on the 11 Nov 1890 along with his wife, Sybella. He died on the 06 Nov 1896 in the workhouse.

A Sybella Gadston was admitted the the CLSA workhouse on 17 Jul 1902 and sent to the Hendon Workhouse on the 23 Jul 1902. I believe she died in 1908, but I can find no trace of her, or Nathan, on the censuses after 1871.

I apologise for such a long post, but I am hoping that after reading all of this, someone may be able to point me in a good direction of where to look next!

Thank You in advance for your time!
Emma :)
