Christopher you have been very helpful to me I really appreciate it. I will check out that website to night, I've searched a lot of websites but don't recall this one. Thank you again - I might get lucky. Sharon

Thank you Christopher for your reply - my only one!  :(  Unfortunately I am in Australia and unable (in this lifetime :'() to travel to Ireland as I care for my totally bedbound disabled daughter.  All the information I have is in my post so perhaps they will have to stay as my brick wall, but I certainly appreciate you taking the time to reply which I printed out for future reference.  Sharon

Thanks for your reply Christine and advice, I will follow up with it when time permits :(  I agree with you re interbreding etc; and am not very hopeful of tying my lines backwards to Scandanavian countries but if you don't try you just never know who may have the one vital bit of info you need! Got to keep optimistic LOL

Thank you Christine, re Grimes that is a scenario I had not thought about - doubt other family members have either!

Re the death cert. I did not know that information was available on it (never seen a death cert), however it is not so much the medical information I require as the genetic heritage information. You see the known condition my daughter resembles is highly prevalent in Scandanavian countries ie Finland/Sweden.  The specialist would like a family connection to these countries - told him we could all claim connection via the vikings & other invasions of UK if we go back far enough!  The known condition can go 10 - 12 generations without making an appearance!! most of us can't trace heritage back that far even, but told him I would try.  I'd already done the family back to these people, so thought I would try to persue it further back if possible.

Thanks for your replies - esp. alt. scenario for Edward/Mary; I have searched Oz websites for info on Marquis of Huntley but if they exist they have not been transcribed yet I guess, will keep looking.

Hi Prue

I had wondered that myself, so have tried free Irish websites to try find birth in OPR but nothing came up.  The information is from another family member, sent to her by a lady from 'Roman Catholic Archives Glasgow'. Her opening paragraph reads:

"There is an entry in the baptismal register for St Andrew's Glasgow, now the Cathedral, which may be relevant to your enquiry.  Barnard (Bernard), born 12th January, baptised 13th January, 1813, lawful son of John Millowen?, weaver, and of his lawful wife, Eleonore Ferroll (Farrell or Carroll?). Sponsors were: James Sherry? and Susanna Tierney (or Tierrey?).  The pronunciation would be similar to McGown/McGowan, and the age would be sufficiently correct for the Barnard/Bernard transported in 1830. Where names are in doubt, this is indicated by a question mark."

As you can see there are quite a few ?'s!! and I have a few of my own! Why was the 'father's' name so different from McGown/an?  I'm unable to find their marriage - despite using the above variations plus a few of my own!  I have tried to check Irish websites but most do not go back that far - at least the free ones.

His TOL details state name as - Bernard McGowan; Ship - Marquis of Huntley; year - 1830;  Native place & trade/calling - NR (really helpful - not); District - Glasgow CJ (? meaning of CJ).

There was another Bernard McGowan born 1816 Ireland transported to Oz, but came on 'Rockhampton' in 1862, was C of E.

There are several anomalies I've found with Bernard's info (Scot's one):
Convicted 1829 age 18 would suggest born 1811.
Bernard died in Oz 1876, NSW BMD states age 60yrs (?) which means was born 1816.  Granted back then there was probably a lot of "guessing" of age at death, but it all adds up to a gigantic headache for us researchers LOL

As yet I've not requested his death cert. (financial reasons) & not sure if it would have the info I need.
Thanks for reading this Prue, any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Christine just to expand info on Bernard McGowan:
Born c1812 Glasgow Scotland (unconfirmed) died Nov 11 1876 Mudgee NSW Oz
married Jane Baker Oct 31 1852 Maitland NSW.

Info from Glasgow Herald Sept 28 1829: "Barnard McGown, for breaking into the shop of Alexander Craig, wright, Barony Glebe, and stealing an iron faced head plane, a hand-saw, and other articles en the 10th July; and farther, breaking into th eshop or booth of Margaret McColl, vegetable dealer, Nile Street, on the 11th July, with intent to steal that also being habit and repute, pleaded not guilty. after a short trial he was found guilty, and was sentenced to 14 yrs transportation."

Ship - Marquis of Huntley; Convict - Bernard McGowan; age 18yrs; education - none; Religion - Catholic; maritial status - single; family - none; occupation - House painter;  charged 1829;  with - House breaking; at - Glasgow; sentenced on 25.09.1829;  to - 14yrs transportation; history - 2nd offence;  former sentence - 6 months; complexion - ruddy/freckled; height 5'3";  hair -brown;  eyes - hazel;  sailed 09.04.1830;  from - Sheerness;  Capt. - William Ainscough; arrived - Sydney; on 21.08.1830;  disposed of - Bailey Park, later Wirragulla, Upper Williams River NSW;  Master- John Hooke.

From 1844 onwards I know his life, but need to trace his heritage prior to Glasgow - the reason is because a clinical neurologist has taken on my disabled daughter as a research project, at 30 she remains undiagnosed, although she resembles a known rare condition tests prove she doesn't have it. Neuro has asked for our family tree history as far back as we can go hence trying to 'smash' this & other relevant brick walls.
Thanks for your time reading this I appreciate it.

Sorry I have not posted reply earlier - I have a disabled daughter and had to put this research on hold for a while :(  Thank you Bob for moving my post to the appropriate board.
Christine thanks for your replies; re Robert/Sinah Evans I have posted & researched many Welsh sites unsuccessfully, so guess now I just post on new sites as I find them in the hope that someone else may be researching them.

re Edward/Mary Grimes nee McMullen I agree with you there is something odd about the 14yr gap and wonder if my original source is correct re their marriage date.  There is no mention of children prior to Charlotte's birth en route to Australia 1827/28.  Will try your suggestion of searching newspapers for info on Mary's death - might just get lucky!!! - that will be the day lol

Roscommon / Grimes married Roscommon c1813

Hello everyone, this is my first post so hope I've done it right, am trying to break thru a very solid brick wall! If anyone can help me with info I would very much appreciate it and my apologies that the 'clues' are rather vague.
Edward & Mary GRIMES (nee McMullen) - believe married c1813 Co Roscommon Ireland; arr. Australia aboard "Hooghley" dep. Ireland 1827; believe he was one member of the 24 Royal Veterans Company aboard ship. A daughter was born en route Charlotte, she later married John Evans; am unable to find parentage of either Edward/Mary; no death record for Edward in Australia & no record of return to UK.

I also think it strange that if they married in 1813 and left Ireland 14yrs later that there has never been mention of any other children born in Ireland between my other contacts researching this couple - no one has been able to go back any further.

TIA for any information
Sharon
