Hi Ray,

I have read your post with great interest and all the details you have unearthed on the family history.

Agadowey on an earlier post (which somehow got high jacked by another member’s posting) on the subject 14 April 2019 suggested that George Augustus Bestall c1822-1902 died in Chicago?

Do you have any evidence that your Australian George Augustus Bestall remarried and had three further sons was the same as my George Augustus Bestall?  I have never seen him placed in Australia.  Is there more than one George maybe?  If he arrived in Australia did he travel alone or with his motherless children?
Do you have a death certificate and does it match the date and place of birth with mine?

You think he died in a Melbourne suburb in 1892 but Agadowey thinks he died in Chicago in 1902.  I am confused?!

What do you think?

Jill

I have been trying to find Audley William John Bestall’s father George Augustus Bestall for many years but with no success.
However there was a posting before my post was split up regarding him.  Could you please send me that information and advise me how I might further look into his whereabouts and that of his ancestors?
Thank you.

Hello cousin Hugh!!

Great to hear from you again and I hope you are enjoying your holiday on the lovely Loire.

I have just been looking on the 1911 census and seen your grandfather (I think) Hugh A age 20 living with his  parents, your great grandparents Hugh A age 63 and his wife Charlotte Elizabeth (Bestall and Audley's sister) age 57 living with all your aunts and uncles.

I have also looked at the proni will calendar and seen that Hugh A died 10 April 1921 and Charlotte Elizabeth died 27 June 1932.  I also see that Robert John Campbell farmer one of their sons of Poplar Vale died 17 May 1926.

I think we should communicate via personal message if you are agreeable and we can compare notes.  I am currently trying to find out what happened to George Bestall b.1825 the father of Charlotte E and Audley Wm J who disappeared from all records after his wife died in 1861 and I think he may have gone to America to join the rest of the Bestall family who I have found In NYC.  Do you have any clues here please?

Hear from you again soon I hope.

Jill.

Hello yes I am still here and am delighted to hear from you.

I think your grandmother Charlotte Elizabeth is the elder sister of Audley William John Bestall b. 1850 and she was born in 1847.  My grandmother Charlotte Elizabeth is the youngest daughter of Audley Wm Bestall (and obviously named after her aunt) and born in 1880.   I am the daughter of the youngest of Charlotte Elizabeth and Joseph Charles Macfarlane's son Ernest Victor Macfarlane.

Which one of Charlotte and Hugh's children are you descended from?   I have located them on the census so know all about them on paper but nothing more.

I would love to hear from you further.  How exciting.  I would love to know more about your family and more Bestall anecdoes.

Best wishes, Jill.

Hello Barbara,
Great to hear from you.
In answer to your questions:-
Margaret Caldwell married George Bestall b. 1825 and they had Charlotte Elizabeth b.1847, Audley William John b.1848/50 (my great grandfather) and Frederick Law b.1854 d.1860 and maybe more but I haven't found them yet!
Some birth records for Audley Caldwell say 1799 and some 1802.
I must say I am confused regarding dates generally. I have found Sir Audley b 1795 and Audley b 1799/1802.  Are they one and the same I wonder?  Sir Audley had 11 children do you know their names?
Just to confuse further the above Audley Wm John Bestall married a Mary Jane Caldwell b 1850 who was the daughter of Henry Caldwell b 1814 and Sarah McFarland. Do you know about this Henry?  He died 1899 at Castlederg.
Anyway that's enough confusion for now.
Hope to hear from you again.
Best wishes, Jill.

I have just seen this thread and I am related to Audley Caldwell b.1802 who is my great great great grandfather.  His eldest daughter Margaret married my relative George Bestall.  Audley died in 1859 and is buried in the Castlederg graveyard.  The inscription on the grave reads as follows:-

Caldwell. To the memory of Audley Caldwell late of Forthtown who entered into life eternal on the 14th of October 1859 aged 60 years.  Also of Frederick Law youngest son of Margaret Bestall who departed this life on the 21st June 1860 aged 5 years. Also of his mother Margaret Bestall eldest daughter of Audley Caldwell who exchanged mortality for life on the 19th of September 1861 aged 34 years aslo James Audley second son of the late Audley Caldwell Esq of Forthtown who died 28th September 1877 aged 47 years.

Audley had a younger brother Henry who might be your relative and also his father Sir Audley had a younger brother Henry who is also related to me through my McFarland line.   He was born in 1814.  Perhaps he could be your relative.

So it looks as though you and I might be related too!!  I have done a lot of this research on this site, by visiting the Castlederg area and contacting local historians.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks for putting me in touch with your friend.  I now have photos of my grandmother's father and mother and her parents and brother.  Had never seen any photos before.  My father and your friend are actually second cousins.  Unbelievable!  So thrilling to see what they look like and match up the family resemblances.

Have you heard anything more from your Bestall contact?  It would be lovely to complete more of the jigsaw and make contact with him.

Hear from you soon I hope and thanks again.

Hello good to hear from you again and perhaps your friend would like to take a look at this topic I posted when I was trying to find out more about the Bestall family. Once again I learnt a lot from the experts on this wonderful site.
