Thanks for your help, I've got the Probate record, he wasn't actually on a Monument at Stornaway, it was a list of people who had lived there and had fought during WW11, Whitley Bay memorial - sister-in-law says it is on there, she's seen it!!!  Liverpool - not sure where that came from.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and pointing out that Elise was born in France.  I wonder why Henri had a street named after him. What did he do to deserve such an honour.

In a local newspaper dated 18 September 1914 - "News has reached here of the death of Captain Cox who was serving with the Belgian Army and who was brother to Mr. Cox of Nenthead,  He was assisting in the defence of one of the Forts in front of Liege on August 5th when he fell".

Mr. (JEAN) Cox was the Mine Manager at Nenthead, Cumberland for the Vielle Montagne mining company, his wife was named Elise and he had two daughters, Suzanne and Madeleine. So far as I know all were born in Belgium.

Can anyone help with this family - i.e. birth, death and marriage dates and what happened to them after they left Nenthead.

Regards, Vera

He appears on the Liverpool War Memorial and on the War Memorial at Whitley Bay and also atStournaway, Scotland.  Can one person appear on so many Memorials, or are there three people with this same unusual name?

If there are people out there who live in Stournaway, Liverpool or Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear who could look on the War Memorial nearest to them and let me know what the inscription says, I would be very grateful.

Hello, I haven't forgotten about you.  I have met one man who remembers your Dad at school and another who says that the only family he knew of with three daughters (one of whom was Ethel) was the Nicholson family.  Their father was called 'Newton' and near to them was a house called 'Carsonholme'.  Do you think this is how the Newholme, etc. maybe came about.  I am still asking for info. so see what this week brings.

Ian, I'm not sure if I've asked this before but do you know anything of the Viponds who lived in Brantford, Ontario?  On the 1911 Census of Canada Thomas Vipond and his wife Mary Jane (nee Cousin) are shown as living in Dublin Street along with William Cousin and his family and a couple of lodgers.  I've got some of the details of them when they lived in England but have lost the track when they went to Canada.

Hi, I live in Alston but wasn't born until 1947.  I will ask if anyone recognises the description of the house your father stayed in but maybe his name would jog memories better.

I think there is information about the mine owner, Jacob Walton, in the local archives.  If you write to:  The Archivist, c/o Local Links, Town Hall, Alston, Cumbria, your letter will be passed on.  If you ring the Records Office in Carlisle they, also, had a box, I think it was called WAL/1, of Walton records.  Hope you get lucky!
