The Common Room / Re: Digital Maps

There used to be a site called History Pin with which you could create online timelines, with marking locations. It was mostly for the location of historic images, but I think you could maybe see if it might work. There may be other online timeline sites available too, but that's one I have actually used though it was a long time ago so it may have changed!

If you're looking for people in Scotland, there's a site called Scottish Indexes (www.scottishindexes.com) which has a searchable database of people admitted to asylums in Scotland. I'm not sure how it compares to the information on Ancestry, as I don't know how many Scottish lunacy records are available on there.

If you're on Facebook, there are a couple of heritage groups in Torry which may have more information. There's the Torry Memories & Heritage Society, and the Torry Heritage Group. Both are active and meet in person too, but will hopefully be able to answer any queries online.

It looks like the printed note with James McClelland's name on it has been stuck down to cover up an error, and the correct details regarding John Henderson have been added.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Off with his head

I have been looking at this off and on, and haven't got very far! I wondered if the first blank, "and wass [...] for [...]" is maybe a contraction of a longer word? Can't get anything out of the second blank, and the third one looks like something like 'mouthoun'.

That record is a bit all over the place, as the list is in reverse chronological order, so it could be that the entry for James Angus is just in the wrong place. Is it possible to see the pages on either side? It's in a different hand, so could have been a note written in haste to record elsewhere.

Might also be worth checking if there are kirk session records for that period for Longside, to see if there's any hint of anything the church might have thought worth noting.

Have a look on ASGRA (Association of Scottish Genealogists and Researchers in Archives) and see if there's anyone who may be able to help. Their website is www.asgra.co.uk

Scotland / Re: Porridge Drawer
« on: Wednesday 05 August 20 09:57 BST (UK)  »
Im in my 50' now. Born Glasgow and lived a while in East Kilbride.  My grandmother lived near us and I often passed her house on the way to school.  She would cut a slice of porridge out of the drawer in the living-room sideboard, wrap it in a torn off piece of newspaper, hand it to me and I ate it on the way to school. She had a huge pot she used to cook virtually everything she made.  Im fairly sure she just gave the drawer a cursory wipe out when the last piece of porridge was taken, before filling it up again.
