Denbighshire / Re: North Wales Counties lunatic asylum records?
« on: Sunday 09 December 12 14:49 GMT (UK)  »
You might find some records at The Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Trust Ablett Mental Health Unit, which is located in Clan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan.

I'm afraid I can't remember who I contacted, or the phone number, but some years ago I found (or rather the lady found for me) a limited amount of information relating to my Grandmother who spent many years at the Denbigh Asylum, and who died there.

Flintshire / Re: What part of Rhyl is Newtown.
« on: Monday 09 July 12 22:46 BST (UK)  »
If you could find the family in the 1891 census (I've allowed my subscription to lapse, or I'd have a look myself) and if they're still at the South Terrace address, you could look at the adresses roundabout and hopefully locate it geographically.
I've looked at the c1870 OS map, and see that the main streets are named, but there are plenty of other rows of houses that are not.
Rhyl was a new(ish) town in the late 19C, and still expanding, so it could well be that an area was named Newtown.
Have you tried contacting Rhyl library? They might put you in touch with a local historian. I know that there is at least one very good one, but cannot recall his name.

Flintshire / Re: Marriage look up please
« on: Thursday 07 June 12 22:38 BST (UK)  »
On NorthWalesBMD between 1902 and 1915, I found births for:

    7 x Albert (3 plain Albert + 4 with second name)
    2 x Llewelyn
    1 x Neville
    1 x Vera
    1 x Violet M

If you contact the Register Office at Mold (they're always very helpful) you should be able to confirm whether Neville, Vera & Violet are yours, then go through the others to find the same parents.

Once you find the youngest, we might then be able to find the parents' marriage.

Flintshire Lookup Requests / Re: Llanasa Parish records-surname Conway
« on: Sunday 22 January 12 22:50 GMT (UK)  »
Two small points regarding the marriages:

1) Where I've only given one witness, the other was the clerk, so I guess of no interest.
2) Of all the "parties", the only one who didn't have an "X" by his name, which suggests that he was literate, was Samuel Conway.

Finally two burials:

10th July 1803, Catherine Conway, Gwespyr.
12 th March 1811, Henry Conway, of David, Gronant. (It doesn't say "son of", but I guess that's what it means.)

Catherine Conway appears interesting. She (if she's the same person) seems to have married three times. I wonder if it was the practise in those days for a woman to use her maiden name on each occasion, including her burial.
Maybe someone can enlighten me.

Yes, the PRs are Anglican. I'm not sure when "The Church in Wales", as it's now referred to, was established. This makes no difference as the records were continuous. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm no expert.)
What might complicate things a bit is that the Nonconformist movement was beginning to get eatablished in the area during the 18th century, and their records are more difficult to find, if they exist at all.
I don't know much about social history, so can't say what sort of dwellings our ancestors lived in. I assume that mine moved into the Llanasa area to find work, as many of them were lead miners, and later, coal miners. So I guess they would have lived in stone cottages.
I'll give you more Conway records later, but for anything before 1761, you'll need to, either buy the transcriptions or visit Hawarden or the Clwyd FHS centre. Anything later than 1812 you'll find on microfilm at Hawarden.

Oops, should have realised it would be the same in a PM, here it is:

Although the columns are shuffled, each line is complete, so you should be able to decifer it.
