Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date for a family group please
« on: Saturday 17 September 16 21:13 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

There's not much to go on here, but could anyone give us an idea of when this photo might have been taken?  If we are correct, the man was born in 1894 and the woman in 1902.  They married in 1940 but had been neighbours for many years prior to then (they had to wait until her parents died as they didn't approve of the marriage).

We know the man had a child - presumably the baby in the photo, who would be my father's cousin, but don't know when he/she was born, or their first name.  The surname is very common and they lived both north and south of the Thames in London and Surrey, so tracking down this cousin's birth is proving nigh on impossible, so we thought that perhaps if we had an idea of when the photo was taken  we might have an idea of when to concentrate the search.

Unfortunately I don't have the original photo or a copy of the back.

Many thanks,

Liz  :)

Australia / Queensland death certificate - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 28 August 16 18:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm sorry if the answer to my question is lurking somewhere here, but I have so far not been able to uncover it.  I have just discovered the Queensland website (very exciting!) where I can order my Great Aunt's death certificate but I am a bit confused about the difference between the certificate and the scan.

Am I correct in thinking that the scan of the register has all the information in its original format - and that I can download it immediately, whereas the certificate has the same information but has to be posted to me?

Thank you,

I have answered my own question - and now have the downloaded scan - very revealing!

Staffordshire / Burntwood Asylum
« on: Thursday 18 August 16 16:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have just received my GG Grandmother's death certificate (Ann Hayward nee Pritchard). She died in Burntwood Asylum in July 1895 - her family were living in West Bromwich at the time and she was buried back at home.

I have been trying to find out what information is likely to be available re her time there - patient records / when she was admitted etc. but haven't had much luck.

So far I have searched the Stafford Archives, National Archives, a website specifically about the Asylum, Ancestry (but 1895 seems to be missing).

Can anyone suggest where else I might look - I've read loads of threads on here which suggest there are records at Stafford but I can't for the life of me find them in the search thing!

Thank you,

Liz

Staffordshire / Sandwell Archives
« on: Friday 29 July 16 10:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Next week I will be driving past West Bromwich and thought I'd do a bit of digging ... I've never been to Sandwell Archives before but noted on their website that you should book a place before you go ... so I emailed a few days ago to say I'd like to visit but am a bit concerned I might turn up and find it shut or something.  Can anyone reassure me that calling in 'off the street' is OK - just in case they haven't seen my email?

I've also emailed Sandwell Valley Crematorium in the hope that they might be able to tell me where exactly my Great Grandparents are buried - I know they are at Heath Lane and I have the dates and register numbers - just hoping they might have little maps like you're given down in Brighton!  ::)

Thanks,

Liz

Family History Beginners Board / Adoption in England - 1950s
« on: Saturday 16 January 16 18:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have searched lots of threads on here for an answer, and also the GRO site but seem to get conflicting answers - probably because I am struggling to understand it all!  ::)  I would be really grateful for some help.

If a child was born in England in the 1950s will the BMD index have any indication that the related certificate is anything other than a straightforward birth registration; for example, might it show an update and then be indexed again as a late entry?

If I were to order the original birth certificate by using the child's birth name and that of the mother, will there be anything on it to tell me that the child was offered for adoption?  (I ask this because I am 99% certain this is what must have happened but have no proof and I suppose I am looking for some as I can find no corresponding death certificate and absolutely nothing other than the birth.)

Once I have the original birth certificate, am I correct in thinking that I could use the birth date from it to help me find the new name of the person.

I have read all the information about the Adoption Contact Register and think I will need the birth certificate before I can fill out the form as I don't know the exact date?

Obviously the person concerned is hopefully still alive, so I cannot give any details - but hope this makes sense?

Thanks for any help,

Liz  :'(

Worcestershire Completed Look up Requests / Ann PRITCHARD born c1839 Tenbury COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 29 December 15 14:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

My 2xG GM, Ann Pritchard married Richard Hayward in Birmingham in June 1865 giving her father's name as William Pritchard.  In subsequent census entries she gives her place of birth as "Tenbury", Worcestershire.

For a long time I have thought "William" was a mistake as I had her as the daughter of Charles Pritchett / Pritchard of Martley who moved to Birmingham, but I have just received the will of Charles Pritchett after getting a bit suspicious of Ann's background.  She very clearly isn't Charles' daughter!   ::)

So back to the drawing board and I am trying to find an Ann, daughter of a William, baptised in Tenbury around 1840.  None of the online resources I have access to (Ancestry / FindMyPast / FS) seem to have baptisms for Tenbury and I am wondering if anyone has access to them or could point me in the right direction?

There does appear to have been a marriage of a William Pritchard in Q3 1840 in Tenbury reg district, but I am not sure who the spouse is; also, there is a Susan Pritchard of Lindridge who has a daughter Ann, born Tenbury, but no father - and her marriage does not suggest that Ann's father is deceased.

I'd be very grateful for any help!

Thank you,

Liz  :)

United States of America / David HAYWARD b1835
« on: Sunday 29 November 15 10:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to work out where David HAYWARD was born - he went to the USA in 1863, married there in 1866 and then disappeared - but also seems to have come from nowhere - other than the reference to England in the 1880 census and his naturalisation papers.

I found the attached in a US directory on Ancestry but I am not sure whether it means his wife (Elizabeth Hayward nee Farley) was a widow, or whether she had died and he was.

If anyone can enlighten me I'd be very grateful!

Also, if anyone can think of anyway of discovering where in England David was born I'd be very grateful!

My Dad's 4th cousin (on paper) is a Y-DNA match for one of David's descendent so I'm guessing he may have been born in the Shropshire area.  My Dad however does not match his 4th cousin and I am trying to narrow down where the npe took place.  (Sorry if that sounds muddled - it sort of makes sense in my head  ::) )

Thanks very much,

Liz

Ireland / Thomas JACOB New Ross, 1850 - manslaughter
« on: Saturday 24 October 15 20:33 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I have no experience of Irish research beyond the 1901 census but am looking at my nephew's paternal line and have found a prison record on FamilySearch for what might be his 4xG Grandfather.  Certainly the name and area is correct.

Thomas JACOB - New Ross, Wexford, 1850, prisoner, manslaughter  :'(

I have tried looking for more information e.g. his age, occupation, the victim etc.  The British Newspaper Archive doesn't appear to have anything about it, nor does Ireland Old News and I have tried Google but am not sure where else accounts of such a crime might appear.  Presumably as it was manslaughter he was unlikely to have received the death penalty?  There is a possible death for "our" Thomas in 1864.

Thank you,

Liz  :)

PS I have not put this in Wexford because it is more a general plea for advice about Irish research - but moderators, please move it if appropriate.  Thank you

Leicestershire / HAYWARD c1836 Leicester
« on: Monday 06 April 15 18:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Leicester is not somewhere I have researched before so I am a bit out of my depth and am hoping sks may be able to help  ;D

Mary Ann HAYWARD born c1833
Philip HAYWARD born c1833
Richard HAYWARD born c1836 (my 2x Great Grandfather)

These three siblings all appear consistently on censuses as having been born in Leicester although Andrew, their older brother was born in c1831 in Shrewsbury and William, their younger brother was born in 1846 in West Bromwich (I have his birth certificate) where the family settled.

The parents are (I think) William HAYWARD and Mary Anne (possibly EVANS), at least for the older children, but William's mother is Sophia (nee BAILEY) - and she is with William on the 1841 census back in Shrewsbury (Piece: 927; Book: 13; Civil Parish: St Mary; County: Shropshire; Enumeration District: 2; Folio: 30; Page: 3).

I have never been able to find a marriage for Sophia and William, nor baptisms for any of the Leicester born children.

If anyone can help me find out where in Leicestershire (the census says Leicester, but ...) my family went on their quick trip across the border I would be really grateful!

Thank you!
