Durham / The Pesky Percivals
« on: Saturday 21 June 14 00:31 BST (UK)  »
Hi – it’s me again with yet another problem family!  ::)   Can anyone please help me sort out the Parents & Grandparents of Sarah Ann Percival b 1872, Spennymoor?    She doesn’t show on any Census with them that I can find, but her father was George Percival & his father was Charles Percival, both brickmakers from Nottinghamshire.   This is what I have so far:

1851 Renny's Lane, Durham St Giles (HO107 / 2391 / 243 / 32)
CHARLES Percival, 27 Brickmaker b Nottinghamshire
SUSANNAH Percival, 26, Wife b Nottinghamshire
GEORGE Percival, 3, Son b Nottinghamshire

GEORGE PERCIVAL:

1869 Marriage - Parish Church, Tudhoe
George Percival, Bachelor, Brickmaker.  Father: Charles Percival, Brickmaker.
Margaret Ann Bainbridge, Spinster, Brickmaker. Father: Thomas Bainbridge, Collier. Both full age.

1871 31 Simpson Street, Cullercoats, Northumberland (RG10 / 5122 / 23 / 39)
George Percival, 22, Brickmaker b Yorkshire U.K (believed to mean Yorkshire, Unknown)
Margaret A Percival, Wife, 26, b Durham, Cockfield

1872 27 Duncombe Street, Spennymoor,
Sarah Ann Percival born to George Percival, Brickmaker, & Margaret Ann Percival formerly Bainbridge.  (Sarah Ann is fully traced after this, except for 1881)

1881 newspaper report of a George Percival of Clayton St, Bishop Auckland having his ear bitten off in a fight (see Charles in 1881).  Clayton Street appears to have lots of common lodging houses.

1891 Common Lodging House, Lyons Lane, Houghton- le-Spring (RG12 / 4117 / 76 / 46)
George Percival, 40, Brickmaker b Nottinghamshire
Hannah Percival, 53, Wife, b White Heaven (sic)

1901 Lodging House Row, Flint Hill, Collierley, Durham (RG13 / 4666 / 220 / 37)
Hannah Percival, 61, Married.  b Cumberland, Whitehaven

CHARLES PERCIVAL:

1871 Claypath Lane, Westoe (RG10 / 5034 / 4 / 2)
Charles Percival, 48, Brickmaker, b Notts, Southwell
Sarah H Percival, 47, Wife, Brickmaker, b Notts, Southwell
Dick Percival, 16, Son, Brickmaker, b Derby, Slubley (?)

1881 6 Clayton Street, Bishop Auckland (RG11 / 4913 / 88 / 24)
Charles Percival, 69, Shoemaker, b Northumberland, Southwell
Susanna Percival, Wife, 68, b Northumberland, Southwell

Not sure if this is the right Charles as the age, occupation & County don’t fit, but “Southwell” does and his wife’s name is the same as in 1851.

As well as the uncertainty over 1881 I can’t find any of them in 1861, or any record of Charles & Susanna / Sarah’s marriage, or what happened to Margaret after Sarah Ann was born in 1872, or any record of George marrying Hannah, or any of their eventual deaths..... but other than that its all covered   ;D

Help !!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Help with 1851 census please - occcupation ?
« on: Wednesday 18 June 14 21:50 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone make out what is written in the box for occupation please?  It looks like it may have been written in later so is it possibly not an occupation at all?  In 1851 1841he was a Coal Miner.

Many thanks

Mary Todd b 1802 Auckland St Helen and Henry Cheesmond / Cheesman b 1801 Fellside Whickham married by Banns in June 1828 at St. Michael, Alnwick, then apparently returned to Durham where their first child was baptised in Merrington in April 1829.

Although the Cheesmond / Cheesman name appears in Alnwick (John Cheeseman of Alnwick was park-keeper to the Duke of Northumberland), I've yet to prove any connection to my lot.

I guess its possible that Mary & Henry had each moved there some time previously, but that would be completely out of keeping with the rest of the family who generally either stayed put or migrated South towards Merrington.

I know that a number of RootsChatters are very knowledgeable about the area and wondered if any of you could throw some light on why they would marry so far away?

Many thanks

The Common Room / COMPLETED Not answerable for wife's debts
« on: Sunday 15 June 14 17:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I've come across an 1899 newspaper notice stating that "I [name & address] will not be responsible answerable for any debt or debts my wife [name] may contract after this date" followed by his name and that of his witness.

There's a few of them on the page so presumably it wasn't a particularly uncommon practice, but can anyone enlighten me as to whether there was some particular legislation under which these notices would have been published?

They married in 1892 but don't appear to be together by the 1901 census, so I'm assuming they separated around the time of the notice.

Many thanks

Durham / Is this the right John & Sarah - and if so who was John Coxon ?
« on: Friday 13 June 14 21:22 BST (UK)  »
John Leadbitter was born c1840 at White Hall (Farm?) Chester le Street. His parents were Joseph & Mary Leadbitter (nee Athey).  By 1861 he is at Cutlers Hall, Benfieldside with his parents & siblings as is working as a Puddler.

The 1871 census for 4 Turn Coat Row, Benfieldside shows the following:

John Leadbitter 29, Lab Iron Works, b Chester Le Street
Sarah Leadbitter 29 Wife, b Lanchester
John Coxon 13, Son, b Rainton
John Moody, 24, Lodger

From the above I assumed that Sarah was John's second wife, his first wife Elizabeth Dixon Cartmell having died in 1866/67 (there is no death certificate but she was buried in Blackhill cemetery, Benfieldside on 3 Jan 1867). As far as I can establish, John & Elizabeth had only one child - Ruth Harvey Leadbitter born 12 Jul 1862 at Cutlers Hall.

I have a copy of what I thought was the correct marriage for John & Sarah in 1871 1870 at Benfieldside:

John Leadbitter Age 41 , Widower, Puddler. Address: Black Hill, Father: Joseph
Sarah Hall, Age 28, Spinster, Address: Black Hill, Father: Thomas Hall

John's details are all correct except for his age.

What I cant figure out is if the 1871 census is 'my' John & Sarah, then who is John Coxon?  If he is Sarah's son then she would have been about 16 when he was born and surely he would have been called Hall?  I've looked for any Coxon / Hall marriages but cant find any, nor can I find John Coxon b Rainton c1858 on the 1861 census.

Any thoughts/ ideas / suggestions gratefully received.

I'm trying to find an elusive ancestor by working sideways and think I've found a 'new' sister but the writing isn't too clear.  Looking for help on the child's forename and abode please.

From an entry found on another page the place could be White Cake Row ??

The Common Room / Conversion to Catholisism - records?
« on: Friday 06 June 14 22:07 BST (UK)  »
I have an ancestor born in Wales who, given the family's later ties to the church, was quite likely a Welsh Baptist.  She moved to England as a child and in 1893 aged around 21 married in a Catholic church to someone who, judging from his name, was probably either from Ireland or of Irish descent.

I haven't been able to trace them at all after their marriage & know absolutely nothing about the Catholic faith so am hoping that someone can help me out in terms of what records I might be able to access regards her conversion and subsequent marriage.

I have not been able to trace her husband at all other than from their marriage certificate so any pointers would be very much appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Where in Yorkshire?
« on: Saturday 24 May 14 23:54 BST (UK)  »
Help needed please in identifying this birth place.

It has been transcribed as Yorkshire UK although I think its more likely one of the Ridings - but I'm hoping beyond hope that its 'shorthand' for somewhere more specific as its the only census record I can find for George Percival born (somewhere) around 1849.
