Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Help appreciated

The amount of shared DNA doesn't exclude your hypothesis being possible.

Have you tried the "What are the odds" tools at DNA Painter?

Have you searched on FindMyPast? They have many will indexed which tells you which record sets wills are in, and physically where they are (or in the case of Exeter, where they were).

So the results arrived and I paid the £35 to unlock the tools - it is  very limited if you don't do that.

Maybe someone can explain this, when I look at shared matches, some matches don't have the icon for the chromosome browser, why not?

I have been looking at some matches where I either already know or can see the family line and shared ancestor, and yet no chromosome browser.

thank you   :)

If you can't see the shared segments with some matches it is probably because the match has not paid to unlock this,  or they have unlocked but have turned the feature off.

There's been some updates to time estimates since Robert's post.  R-L226 is now estimated to have originated a little earlier around 250 AD/CE.

Have you considered FamilyTreeDNA?

MyHeritage does sometimes make it free to unlock for a limited period (so you get the chromosome browser and admixture tools, plus clustering etc) but it's been for new kits.  Some people delete their kit and upload again when this happens, but you'd lose any notes etc on your matches.

The Common Room / Re: 3 features that I would like Ancestry to implement.

I do like that Ancestry has added a "viewed today" button that appears.

On the DNA front I would like to be able connect DNA matches to trees other than the tester's tree.  I keep rather bare-bones public pedigrees attached to DNA testers and would prefer to not have that tree going "wide".   I keep several other trees on Ancestry with descendants of siblings of ancestors and I would far prefer to attach people to those trees.

England / Re: What would you understand "kinsman" in a will to mean?

Possibly they're related in many ways.  The brother of an ancestor wrote in his will that he forgave "my relative" a debt.  The "relative" was descended from three of great aunts of the person writing the will, so related in many ways.

A paper about Anglo-Saxon migration to the British Isles was recently published, although I am having great difficulty understanding it!
