Lanarkshire / Senior Magistrate of Hamilton COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 12:13 GMT (UK)  »
My GGG grandfather was a Senior Magistrate of Hamilton. Would the records of his service and cases he heard in the early 19th century have been retained? If so, where would these be held -- the local burgh archives, the NAS court records or the Mitchell Library?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers,

Lanarkshire / Lanarkshire Headstones/Thanks to Sancti
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 08:47 GMT (UK)  »
I’d like to publicly acknowledge the extraordinary service Sancti is rendering to all family researchers through his continuous photographic documentation of headstones in Lanarkshire cemeteries.  We all owe him a debt of gratitude for the time and effort he has so generously expended in this project. Sancti has been enormously helpful to me, as I know he has been to many others in this Rootschat forum. Bravo, Sancti.

Gratefully,

Antrim Completed Look up Requests / 1942 address from directory?
« on: Saturday 30 October 10 08:44 BST (UK)  »
I think I've located on the IFHF site the death certificate of a missing relative Mary Dodds (nee Paterson) who emigrated from Scotland to Ireland. Unfortunately, her maiden surname (Paterson) is not not recorded, nor is any informant cited. The only way I can establish if this is indeed my relative is through her last known address.

The last recorded address of Mary Dodds (nee Paterson) before her death in 1942 was noted in her twin sister's diary as Highbury, Cadogan Park, Belfast. The address cited on the death certificate of Mary Dodds is 13 Summerhill Street, Belfast.

The fact that no informant is cited, and that the cause of death was Senile Dementia with Complications, would suggest that she died in a nursing home under a doctor's care.

Was there a nursing home at 13 Summerhill Street, Belfast in 1942?

Does anyone have access to a Belfast telephone directory circa 1940-1942 to verify the address of Mary Dodds at Highbury, Cadogan Park, Belfast? Alternatively, is there one online?

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Lanarkshire / Archibald Paterson Soldier 1812 Marriage
« on: Saturday 28 August 10 11:08 BST (UK)  »
I have an OPR marriage (1812) in Hamilton for Archilbald Paterson and Christian Wright, which reads:

Arch Paterson soldier in the 70 Regt of Scot & Christian Wright of this parish for 1 day 14 February

Archibald Paterson, subsequent to his marriage, went to Kingston, Upper Canada, where he settled and  his children were born.

Would he have been with the Royal Scots in 1812? If not, what army is signified by 70 Regt Scot? Would Kew retain his personnel papers?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Lanarkshire / Where to find a birth in Chryston, Lanarkshire
« on: Monday 23 August 10 14:27 BST (UK)  »
Would a 1798 birth in Chryston, Lanarkshire, be registered on SP in Cadder, Coatbridge or Glasgow? Chryston seems to be in some sort of limbo in central Scotland.

Many thanks for your help.

Lanarkshire / 586 Springburn Road, Glasgow
« on: Thursday 22 July 10 08:58 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather was born at 586 Springburn Road, Dennistoun, Glasgow. Was that a hospital or private residential address in the late 1800s? I had a look on Google street view and it looks residential.

Many thanks for any info.

Scotland / Paterson/previous marriage possible or not?
« on: Sunday 07 March 10 08:19 GMT (UK)  »
John Paterson was born in 1879 and died in 1959, his death certificate citing him as widower of Jessie Cunningham or Cleland, whom he married in 1946. They were both aged 66 at the time of their marriage in Tradeston, Jessie Cunningham having been previously married to a Samuel Cleland.

I have just received their 1946 marriage extract, which doesn't give any details of Jessie Cunningham's previous marriage , although her marital status is shown as 'widow' and her signature appears as Jessie Cleland. John's marital status is 'bachelor'. It was a civil ceremony in the Office of the Registrar for the District of Tradeston.

It seems rather odd that John Paterson would have married for the first time at such an advanced age. Is that marriage extract conclusive or is it at all possible that he was married before? Was it mandatory to disclose a previous spouse on a marriage certificate of that era?

Lanarkshire / Allan Shipping Line
« on: Monday 22 February 10 00:35 GMT (UK)  »
Would anyone know if there are Allan Shipping Line archives that might contain personnel records of employees?

As it was a massive enterprise, I'm wondering if anyone else has researched a former employee of Allan Shipping Line.

Lanarkshire / Westland Drive, Glasgow
« on: Sunday 21 February 10 10:38 GMT (UK)  »
An ancestor lived at 19 Westland Drive, Glasgow, which (if you Google it) now appears to be a sheltered housing facility called Westland Court.

Is anyone familiar with this building? Was it always sheltered housing? What was it circa 1958?

Many thanks.
