Derbyshire / What is the link between this stone beer bottle and Ironville?
« on: Sunday 31 December 17 12:18 GMT (UK)  »
I am working on a local history project and have been struggling to find the history behind a stone bottle that has "Geo. Clayton Ironville" printed on it, I attach a photograph.
The only George Clayton I can find locally was an Ironworks Manager living locally in Codnor Park (next to Ironville) in the 1891 census and in the next door village Jacksdale (Notts) in the 1901 Census. Could this be a link? He is buried in the local church Yard. Or is this a "Red Herring"?
He was listed in the Kelly's trade directory of Derbyshire of 1895 as mineral water manufacturer - also he was a preacher - maybe a lay preacher? He may have traded between 1893 and 1897.
If any one can help me find out more it would be really appreciated.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Christ Church Cemetery, Ironville
« on: Saturday 05 August 17 16:39 BST (UK)  »
I edit the village newsletter. The Church Warden is writing an article for the Parish Church in relation to family history and the church. He asked if I could find a very old picture of the cemetery to go with his piece. I came across the picture below from between 1900 and 1910. Could someone work their magic upon on it to make it clearer, perhaps adding a little colour.  Zoom in on the woman by the graveside.  This was a popular thing they did on postcards at that time, they would 'hide' a figure in the photo to give it a ghostly character, usually a woman or boy. Notice the big knobbly waste embankment?  Truck load after truck load used to empty onto that spoil heap, during the 19th and early 20th century.

World War One / Help with identifying WW1 sodier's parents:
« on: Tuesday 15 March 16 20:58 GMT (UK)  »
I am doing some research into the story behind the Soldiers who are named on our village war memorial (Ironville & Codnor Park). At the moment I am trying to find out more about this soldier:
Lance Corporal 14236
15th Bn., Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment).
Died Tuesday 1st October 1918.
Buried at Zandvoorde Cemetery, Belgium.
Grave ref. II.B.24.

The UK, Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects, 1901-1929 for Gilbert Tom Bogg   1914-1915
Hounslow 422501-424000 states that his effects should go to Florence Campanelle (see attached file).

I have so far drawn a blank on the 1911 census. if anyone can provide some help with this it would be really appreciated.

Would it be possible for some to remove the "wire" going across this picture of my local church?  If some one could it would be really appreciated.

England / Where was Lily/Lilly/Lillie Payne born 1877 in Sheffield post 1897?
« on: Tuesday 14 October 14 20:36 BST (UK)  »
I have been struggling to find Lily Payne born abt. 1877 in Sheffield in any census after 1891 when she was a servant aged 14 in the house of Frederick George Mayor in Tutbury, Burton on Trent Staffs.  In1881 she was with her father Enoch Payne and his family in Sheffield.
She was present at her brother's wedding (George Enoch Payne) in 1897 at Woodville, Derbyshire.
So where was she after 1897?  She may have been married in 1901 but so far I have not found a marriage record that fits.  I have tried cross referencing marriages on the BMD with the 1901 & 1911 censuses but so far without success.
Her first name on the BMD is spelt Lily, in the 1881 census it is spelt Lilly and at her brother's wedding in 1897 when she is a witness she signs her name Lillie!
I am hoping someone can help me get through this brick wall that I have encountered for many years now.
If anyone can help trace Lily/Lilly/Lillie Payne it would be really appreciated.

It would be really appreciated if some one could work their magic on the attached faded photograph.

It is of a local pottery that disappeared in the middle of the nineteenth century.

The photograph was probably taken Circa 1860.  The pottery disappeared shortly after that date.

Many thanks.

Andy

If someone could help me put a more precise date on these two photographs of foundry workers from my village, it would be appreciated.

Hope that I am mot imposing too much. Is there any chance of you working your magic  on this picture - making it sharper, clearer and perhaps adding some colour.

If you have time it would be really appreciated.

Sorry probably should not have uploaded this picture. Now contacting site to see if I can use as part of my local history project so may reappear!
