Roxburghshire / Re: Clan Mow?
« on: Wednesday 17 April 19 22:52 BST (UK)  »
Clan Mow is still thriving, and living in England!!! I am the authenticated and acknowledged 'Clan Chief', with proven descent from Lord John Mow of Mow in 1636. As family historian and keeper of the family archive, I may be able to help you with information you require.

Ooh, I didn't realise that the clan is still alive and kicking! let me find the what I might need from you and I'll get in touch.

Cumberland / Re: Where is John Forster Buried
« on: Tuesday 09 April 19 21:56 BST (UK)  »
Another relative descended from the Forster family here!

Both Cecelia and John Forster are my 4x great grandparents on my maternal grandfather's side of the family tree, through their daughter Embling MacKay Forster born in 1856. This is rather extraordinary as I stumbled across this when looking for information for my ancestors from maternal grandmother's side of the family!

I was under impression that they were buried in Longtown? But then I could be wrong. However there is one thing that I've always been curious about- Cecelia's birthplace. She seems to have changed her place of birth on the censuses over the time so I'm wondering if she was really born in Prembrokeshire? Additionally, I always thought that the reason why they got married in Gretna Green because Cecelia was too young to get married without parents' consent in England?

Ayrshire / Re: Confusion over place of birth.

Hi,

Where have you found Agnes on the 1861 Census please?
1841 -She's in Craigie age recorded as 30  with husband Robert and 4 children.
1851- She's in Riccarton age recorded as 47 with 5 children ( husband Robert is probably the 49 year old farm servant recorded at a farm in Craigie).

There is a death registration at Riccarton in 1865 of an Agnes Gray - but the index has no age or mother's maiden name recorded.  Not to say the original doesn't have relevant information recorded i.e marital status, spouse's name, maiden name,  informant's name.
Not sure if this is your Agnes - I was struggling to locate her on 1861 Census.

Looby :)

Thank you! You've had more luck than I did! As for 1841 and 1851 Censuses, the info you had is correct. The 1861 info that Chempat found is also correct. This is complicated because at the exact same time, there was another Gray Family in Ayrshire who had children with similar names and the parents in that family were also called Agnes and Robert! Additionally, Agnes's maiden name is rather unusual despite that I have two ancestors from separate branches sharing the similar surname. But I do appreciate all that you did to find these information including the 1851 Census for the McClounan family.

Did she die after 1855 to let you try to confirm her parents' names from her death reg?

Monica

I think she did die after 1861 as I cannot find any records of her in the 1871 Census. But the problem is I cannot find her death record!

I've been looking at the censuses of my 4x Great Grandmother- Agnes Gray nee McClounan (the maiden name can varies). In a couple of censuses, it was mentioned that she was born in Straiton Between 1806 and 1811, but when I looked up the birth records and the record that match closely as possible was for a Agnes McLeownan, born in Maybole in 1809.

So I was wondering if it is possible for someone born in Straiton to be registered in Maybole because they fall under the same parish or not? I remember seeing a website that explain how the old parishes worked but I can't seem to find it anymore.

World War One / London Scottish 2/14 Battalion in October 1918
« on: Friday 09 November 18 23:38 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

Might seems like a long shot but I've discovered earlier this year, that my 2x great Uncle James Stewart was killed in action in the Flanders (not sure if France or Belgium but I'm sticking with the latter). He was with London Scottish and died on 14th October 1918. He's buried in Derry House Cemetery 2 near Ypres.

I was wondering if anyone know any information about what his battalion was doing that day and whereabouts they were roughly that fateful day.

Also I'd appreciate if anyone could tell me if it would be possible to get a photo of him (if it was taken by the british Army when he first enlisted) from London Scottish Museum or IWM? My family has no photo of him and this year was the first time we learned of his death.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Re: Scottish Graveyards
« on: Monday 08 October 18 20:40 BST (UK)  »
Thank you arthurk,

I've used the Scottish monumental inscriptions site a couple times but I'm finding it to be rather expensive!

I'm trying to narrow down my 4x Great Grandparents- William Stewart and Jean Ramsay who were thought to have died in the lanarkshire sometimes before 1841 Census. But the problem is that I have no idea what their birth years were and where they were living at the time of their death. This is like searching for a needle in the haystack!

Thanks.

Graveyards and Gravestones / Scottish Graveyards

Hi,

I'm not sure if this has already been discussed before, but is there any websites that specifically focuses on graveyards in Scotland? I've been on Find a Grave in Scotland website but it seems to be defunct now?

Cheers.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Place of birth on census

Your stories sounds fascinating.... I love hearing about other people's genealogy and why certain things happened in the past.

I have noticed there were instances where the farm names were recorded in Census which is good for research reasons.

I did wonder if my ancestor put down a different place of birth initially because she was underage when she married her husband during a runaway wedding at Gretna Green. Perhaps a way to avoid being detected by her family?
