Merionethshire / Thomas and Mary Thompson of Dollgelly
« on: Saturday 02 April 11 22:10 BST (UK)  »
Thomas and Mary kept the Liquor Vaults Pub in Lion Street from about 1868 until they died in 1878 and 1880 respectively.  Can any one tell me anything about the pub or where they may be buried?   I'm visiting the area next weekend and would like to visit their graves.  They may have been Catholic.
Thanks

Devon / Bratton village
« on: Tuesday 07 September 10 15:40 BST (UK)  »
I have ancestors (Smale / Martyn) who come from Bratton Clovelly.  Several of the censuses just give their address as "Bratton Village'.  Someone said that this does not mean the whole of Bratton Clovelly, but has something to do with somewhere set up by Elizabeth Manning, who was apparently a village benefactor.  Can anyone clarify or enlarge on this please?

Wicklow / Help with Districts on birth certificate please
« on: Saturday 03 April 10 11:18 BST (UK)  »
???  ???  I am trying to figure out where my family might have lived.  I have got a birth certificate that gives the Superintendent Registrars district as Rathdrum and the Registrars District as Ashford.  Then it says the district of Ashford in the Union of Rathdrum in the county of Wicklow.  The actual entry just gives the address as Wicklow.

Could this mean they lived in Wicklow town, or would they have lived in Ashford itself?

World War One / WW1 Medal Card
« on: Saturday 27 March 10 15:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,   ??? ::)

I've not seen one of these before.  My Grandfather has a medal card which says Corps LC (Is that the Labour Corps).  Reg No 149875.  It gives dates of enlistment and discharge and says Cause of Discharge Para 392 (XVI)  S.  It also says Action taken List L.C 5069.  That's all that is on there.  Could anyone decipher this for me?  I don't seem to be able to find any other record of him, but I may be looking in completely the wrong places!!

Thank you.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Humphrey SMALE in NZ?
« on: Saturday 26 September 09 16:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Humphrey Smale (b1815 in Devon) and his wife Susan disappear from the English Censuses during 1871 & 1881.
His son Jethro Smale and his wife Fanny arrive in Wellington in 1876 aboard the Waipa from the UK and I'm wondering if Humphrey and Susan are there too.  I have trawled through passenger lists that I can find with no luck, and I wondered if anyone has any ideas .  Are there any censuses in NZ and if so are they available online?
In 1881 Jethro has reappeared and is a policeman in Greenwich.  Humphrey reappears in 1991 in Penge, Surrey (outskirts of London - about 20 miles away).  A co-incidence?  Or did they emigrate together and Humphrey stayed longer?
Any thoughts gratefully received.

United States of America / Passenger & Immigration Lists Index 1500s - 1900s

Dumb question!!!   I have seen an index entry to this list on Ancestry and I wanted to look at the whole entry.  Where can I access them?  Are they online?

Australia / SMALE Immigration - South Australia
« on: Monday 27 April 09 22:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi ,

This is a long shot but I am trying to trace Humphrey Smale and family.  I believe they left UK some time after 1861, but I don't know where they went.  Would you be able to check and see if they came to South Australia?  He should have been travelling with wife Susan and children:  Jethro, Sarah, Alma, Mary, William, Amelia and John.  I would be very grateful, but please don't do it if it's difficult.

Thanks,

Is it possible to access any of the NZ Censuses for the period 1861 - 1900 online?

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Smale Family missing from 1871 Census
« on: Tuesday 21 April 09 17:30 BST (UK)  »
I have a family of Smale's:  Humphrey and Susan, with Jethro, Sarah Ann and Alma Susan.  In 1861 they were in Stoke Damerel in Devon, but by 1873 Sarah is getting married in Milton, Portsmouth.  However in 1871 I cannot find ANY of the family on the Census.  I have tried all the similar names - Small, Snale, Shale etc but no joy.  Any ideas?
