Technical Help / Re: useless !!!

Xin the funny symbols as i said could be because the programme they are associated to are no longer loaded since a format, ie if they are excel etc and you havn't loaded office then until you do they won't show ;)

I asked if your "wonderful" man lol had formatted because he doesn't have to be so wonderful to format :P and if he charged you for the privilege it is something you could have done yourself with a few hints, but as you say if it is something that seems daunting to you,
personally i point non-techies towards zone alarm as it does nearly everything for you in the background and has a learn mode that trains itself to how you work, as your starting from fresh and have a programme maybe also load malware, again it is easy to use and together with your programme should help keep you protected
http://www.malwarebytes.org/

go for the free version ;)

Sorry but before loading norton you need to know what your pc is capable of,
as norton is hungry and eats resources especially if using on an older machine,
before loading any programme you need to look at the effects.

When you say he sorted your machine did he format it? ie wiped it clean and started again?
if so the folder you says has strange symbols are they connected to a programme that is no longer installed on your pc?

hard to know if the supposed virus is genuine or just a html code that is being reported without knowing what you have on your memory stick

That's right Downside, My query could have been clearer and should have read "How can they guarantee the on line backup?"

As mentioned they can't, couple of years ago a fire in Houston took down hundreds of thousands of websites,
and on that occasion luckily no data was lost, if you need to make sure the info' is safe then you probably need 3 locations,
god forbid a burglary, fire etc could be a disaster at home and then a week or two while you wait to get replacements, could be a long time, a lot of servers you think maybe based in the UK are via USA,
they say things happen in 3's, not sure about that but do you want to find out ;)

Technical Help / Re: Copy Email Files
« on: Sunday 25 April 10 11:23 BST (UK)  »
Margaret, i have a few email accounts and a hotmail one, my Bt and hotmail ones
i have emails in those going back to 2007, and during that time have changed machines and formatted etc
and never lost them, like you i have various folders and in my bt one i can multiple select mails and move, forwarding yes you would probably have to do one at a time.
i did have a GM mail and just checked as i havn't used it since nov' last year and all mails were still there,
but not sure how their archive works as i only used it as a backup,
same as hotmail i wouldn't rely on it for important stuff, if you don't sign in for a period i THINK you may lose some,
but like anything if important backup ;)

or after all my prattling lol as Marky says you can try gmail backup

Technical Help / Re: DropBox for Synchronising 2 Computers
« on: Saturday 24 April 10 11:03 BST (UK)  »
i assume as you mention dropbox you have 2 computers?
if so you have to remember if the computer you set up the main dropbox on has any problems,
ie needs formatting etc then you will lose the dropbox,
so the dropbox is just to move files between the computers not to store them in.

sorry just noticed title so is two computers, so again if the dropbox is to connect the two then as above,
IF it is on a server then i assume the dropbox is so you can access the files from varios places,
and in that case i would work on the files on the computer and when finished put in the dropbox
