Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1861 census look up please...
« on: Tuesday 03 February 09 18:30 GMT (UK)  »

I have Thomas Caldwell in 1871 living with his wife Mary(Ann) and Son James aged 8.

Thomas Caldwell was born in ireland 1839-41 wife Mary was 1843/44 also in ireland. They were listed as living in Barton Street Darlington in 1871.

If I am really lucky they will have just got married or Thomas will be listed.

Their son was born in Middlesbrough Yorks.

Please can anyone help, I am trying to trace which part of ireland they came from, and how long they had been in England. he worked as a Puddler. I have no idea what Mary Ann's maiden name is.

I would appreciate any help you can offer
Regards
Bernie

Hi
Thanks for that...I have him in 1871 aged 30 wife Mary 28 working as a puddler.Son James 8 and daughter Margaret 1 This is where it says Robert Father aged 40???and William Graham a lodger aged 22...

I,m wondering if Robert was a brother or something like that and just joking with the enumerator...as there is only 10 years difference.

I am going to look in the 1861 census. Because Mary would be 18 and just married (or not) their son James was born in Middlesbrough in 1864..

Thanks for all your help

Hello
This could be a bit of a joke then..because we thought it was strange in the census, it states Thomas 30  the head, Mary the wife and then says Robert...father aged 40...and also a friend..there was also another man there a William Graham aged 22 as a boarder... This was in the 1871 census when they were living at Barton Street Darlington.

I,m now wondering if he was teasing the enumerator??! Maybe Robert Caldwell was a brother?

It would be great if the William did fit..but I am not sure as his wife Mary was born in ireland too.

Thanks for your help

Ireland / How did they get to England?
« on: Monday 02 February 09 15:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking to find details of my gggrandparents Thomas Caldwell and his wife Mary Ann. They also lived with Thomas's father Robert.

On the 1891 census it states Thomas was 42,born 1839 his wife 37born 1844, but all it says is Ireland. They had a son James aged 17 born 1864  in Middlesborough England.  How will I ever find out which part of ireland they came from or how they got here..

Please can anyone help??

The Bradshaws would be great...

Horace married Mary Bell, and had margaret, edith, horace, john1 died, alan, freda, marjorie and john 2. Lived in County Durham (Shotton and Wheatley Hill) till his death 1967. Was a check weigh man down the mines.

I think john the father,  came from the midlands, some part family say Hanley stoke on trent others say Wolverhampton...

I,ll be happy with any info you can dig up..it will be nice to see where they originate from..

Best regards

OOh I didnt think you did ireland too, Ive put a request/post in the Ireland thread. I thought you did Durham...sorry no offence meant..

I dont know my way round here very well, I will really have to start paying more attention.

So they were here in 1871...So the Margaret there is an older Margaret that had died. The father would that be Thomas's father??

This can be confusing..lol

Sorry to be a pain

Ireland / Caldwell

A lovely lady on here has been so kind as to help me with my family tree. I now have a Thomas Caldwell who was 42 in the 81 census and his wife Mary Ann who was 37. His father who was named Robert was also with them. They were Puddlers.

It doesnt say any more other than they were born in Ireland. Where would I begin to start looking for their details? They were living in the north east of England then.

Any help you may be able to offer will be appreciated.

So there is an irish connection, is it unusual for them to say ireland rather than an actual place..

I think there was a George, but I cant be sure at the moment.

Thank you so much for all your hard work
