Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Any ideas on when?
« on: Wednesday 23 November 05 09:37 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all for your replies, and thank you very much to rkaa for colouring the picture.....it is beautiful and makes her loook so much more real. I am looking at her again and still feel she is a Shelton.

I am posting a pic of  2 Shelton brothers from the album. We know who they are as they were twins and we only have 1 set of twins in the records.......could they be this ladies brothers? I am posting it as a new thread.

Thanks again,
Helen

Hi Glen,

I think you're right about the shutters bit - I don't think houses in Uk had shutters like that.

I have their wedding photo in Hong Kong and in that they are all very warmly dressed in December.....so maybe it isn't Hong Kong at all!!!! I have never managed to track down their wedding certificate, but on the back of the photo my Great grandfather wrote '13 December 1913 Hong Kong', and then sent the photo back to his family in England. So I assumed that was the date and place of the marriage!

Thanks anyway,
Helen

Hi Prue,

The photo is on card...there's nothing on the back and it is in one of the biblical style photo albums with 'framed' cut outs to slot the pictures in, leather bound etc. I had thought she might be my great-great grandpa's sister Agnes Shelton but her age would be all wrong if this was 1880s. Maybe she was the other side of that family, a Wade or a Hall even. My great grandma seems to have added pics of her husband's family to what was originally her family album I believe, so it complicates things further!

Thanks anyway,
Helen

This lady appears in an old family album. I don't know who she was but if I could date her it might help narrow it down a bit.

Thanks

This attached picture shows my great grandma Dorothy Warrener (nee Hounsom) sitting at the right. I want to know where it was taken roughly as that might help identify some of the others in it.

Brief history:
Dorothy was born 1893 in Aldershot, Hampshire. Her father was in the army and the family appear on census returns at the barracks there. In December 1913 she married William Warrener in Hong Kong
and the following September gave birth to my grandfather in Shanghai. Sadly she died from complications the next day. She was 21. I know very little about her and her family as my grandfather was sent back to UK and brought up by his aunt and paternal grandparents.

In the picture Dorothy looks like she might be pregnant. If that's the case it must have been taken in 1914 and would most probably be HK or Shanghai.

Her parents and 7 siblings were back in UK and all four of her brothers enlisted and served in WW1. A newspaper cutting I have reports the death of her brother George from illness during the war at Devonport and mentions their parents still being at Aldershot.

When I first saw the pic I assumed this was a pic of the Hounsom family but if it was taken in far east then that's probably not the case.

Any thoughts on this picture would be most appreciated,
Thanks
Helen

Does anyone know of a web site where one can post old photos to get an idea of place or even people in them?

I have photos taken of my GGgrandmother which I think were taken between her marriage in Hong Kong in 1913 and her death in 1914 in Shanghai. She is pictured with various other Europeans and I want to get an idea of whether the surrounding buildings could be in the far east or maybe the pictures are earlier than I thought and are in UK (possibly Aldershot, Hampshire).

If there is not a website for this, I would be interested in setting one up.

Thanks
Helen

Radnorshire Lookup Requests / Thomas Jones Rhayader area 1851
« on: Friday 14 October 05 09:17 BST (UK)  »
I am still looking for Thomas Jones born c1846 in St Harmon or Rhayader or that area, in 1851 census. I sent for his marriage certificate and that confirms his father was Benjamin Jones.

So would like to find Thomas, Benjamin and also his possible grandparents,  John and Margaret Jones (born c 1795 and c1799) in 1851 if possible. All born in Radnorshire.

many thanks if anyone can help.

Helen
