2nd cousin could also be
“1st cousin 2x removed
Half 1st cousin 1x removed
Half great-granduncle
Half great-grandnephew”
  Source: Ancestry

There were three other examples of 2nd and 3rd cousin definitions but I don’t know if I am allowed to post their examples.

I’m experiencing a lot of internet problems tonight.  It takes forever to load sites and now I’m having trouble copying…

2-3 cousin also includes a match between her mother and someone else that could also be a 1st cousin, 1 time removed

and now my Ancestry screen is blank.  There are a few options for 2nd-3rd.

I’m going to close sites, turn off my iPad and will come back shortly.  Very frustrating.

I believe she is saying her mother has a 2nd to 3rd cousin match with someone.  But, it doesn’t mean that they were only cousins.  Be right back…

Hi Sandra  :)

Are we ruling out Malcolm Alexander or is he a likely suspect?

Sorry, I have questions/comments…

I wonder if Smith was a made up surname.   :-\
Was your great grandmother headed back to Ireland c1931 (if you don’t mind sharing)?
Regarding changing occupations…some of my ancestors had very different occupations after they arrived in Canada, I wouldn’t be too concerned about a possible occupation change for Malcolm if he sailed to/returned to England.

1931 Toronto Directory
Malcolm   emp Eatons.  h 2 Chudleigh   [Eatons - department store]
Malcolm D   (Smith Bros).  h 15 Bellefair av
Malcolm F   emp CNR   r 73 Osler    [CNR - Canadian National Railway]
Note:  I removed the link that I originally provided here.  I’ve used the site in the past with no problem.  However, my iPad has been extremely sluggish since opening the site a few minutes ago and I don’t want anyone to experience the same problem.

Added: 1932 directory
Malcolm was a salesman at Eatons
Smith Bros. were bookbinders

Family just arrived; I have a somewhat quick errand to run…

My brother has 36% (if I’m remembering correctly) Scottish DNA.  We have no known Scottish ancestors.  RootsChatters have mentioned that folks went back and forth, between Scotland and Ireland.  DNA can get muddled in the area.

Family is chatting, it’s difficult to concentrate, sorry.

I’m from the Toronto area.  I would enjoy trying to help when I return (perhaps an hour or so).  In the meantime, Sandra (and others) have been tremendously helpful regarding Ontario research.  Perhaps something can be found; don’t give up hope.  ;)

Without mentioning names of living people, did family possibly use a (Irish/Scottish) naming pattern?

Malcolm Alexander Smith appears to have remained in Canada as he passed away in 1976 and was buried in Toronto.
