Armed Forces / Sherwood Foresters Militia

Hi,
I'm posting this for a friend of mine, (well distant relative really).
"Can anyone please explain why someone attesting" to join the Sherwood Foresters Militia (3rd Bttn.) in 1907 should obtain his "discharge by purchase" only a few days later?
Other than a sudden and drastic change in family circumstances, is there some technical reason for this? Maybe the answer could lie with the fact that on his attestation record he states that he already is a member of the 2nd Volunteer bttn. Sherwood Foresters."
Any help would be appreciated.
Linda
