Where is Beddern/Biddern?
« on: Thursday 26 August 04 16:16 BST (UK) »
My gg grandfather got married in St Cuthbert's in York. Both he and his wife gave their residence at the time of marriage as Biddern (her) and Beddern (him). I am assuming that they refer to the same place. Tbe problem is that I cannot find out anything about this place - does anybody know? The bride was 19 at the time of marriage so I am assuming that she was still in the family home, which by convention would be within the bounds of St Cuthbert's parish, which is given as being part of the City of York.

Any suggestions on the location gratefully received

So it would appear to be a poorhouse, which fits some of the facts. The wedding certificate shows that the bride's father was deceased in 1840. What I have got to do now is work out why the groom should have upped sticks and left rural Norfolk for York. He ended up as a dock labourer in Hull. Thanks for the tip.
