Swain/ Sweain/Swaine of Gawsworth
« on: Tuesday 01 November 05 10:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello fellow rooters!
I have managed to find John Sweain dob 1541 at Gawsworth, Cheshire and have been reasonably successful at tracing his line downwards. BUT I think he had siblings, in particular a William or a Thomas or a Peter, as they all seem to be family names. The surname changes within the family from Sweain to Swaine or Swain. Can anyone help me find the brothers or sisters? ???
Thanks
Potty Dotty

I too have a John Swain of Gawsworth married a Joan and had children from 1568 onwards: Ellen, Margrett, Joan, Katherine, Emma, Edward, Marie and John.

Is this the same John? If so where did you find his birth? Findmypast Gawsworth registers start after 1541.

Hi

Not sure how helpful this is...

Popular BI:
31 Mar 1567 John Sweaine, Cheshire, Gawsworth, St James, bur.
14 Aug 1559 Thomas Sweaine, Cheshire, Gawsworth, St James, bur.

Perhaps a visit to the church/graves may yield more clues.

Hi Potty Dotty,

I can't actually help you - I am just intrigued - I had never heard the name Swain in connection with my Forsters of Bradwall/Sandbach/Astbury and I had never heard of Gawsworth .....until yesterday when I found (and I have to double check that it is correct but cannot at the moment) that Elizabeth Swain b1733 Gawsworth or Sandbach (not sure) married William Forster born 1734 Bradwall, Sandbach, Cheshire.   I don't know where they married yet.

Still amazed - Sue
