Have had a burrow around for George and Susannah's marriage - nothing showing on FreeBMD Is one possible in  Stoke on Trent in 1859 but one of the ladies hasn't been transcribed ::) Also looked in Herefordshire in 1841 for a Susannah Halbury but no luck - there is a promising Susan Hall age 7 in Kington (can't find a Kingstone in Hereford) who seems to have moved to Worcestershire (moving towards Cannock perhaps ???) in 1851 but need someone to check full details. Could be totally off track but fun ;D
Cheers Jan ;)

I've found George and Susannah in 1861 Greenwich:

RG09/402 Folio 113, Page 37
2, Alfred Place, Walnut Tree Road, Greenwich East
(I parked in that road sometimes - it's opposite the former Greenwich District Hospital - when expecting my youngest child).

George Rhodes, 28, Head Lodger, Mar, M, 28, Case Box Maker, b. Stafford Cannock
Susannah Rhodes, Wife, Mar, F, 24, Hereford Kingston
George Rhodes, Son, M, 1, b. Kent Greenwich

In 1881, Jesse's parents and siblings have moved to Lewisham.  The other boys are at home as scholars, or working for dad...wonder why Jesse was sent away to school?  Is the Jesse in 1881 the right Jesse?

Just some thoughts to add a bit of excitement to the hunt  ;D

I had a look at the 1881 entry (familysearch version).  Royal Parade is actually in Blackheath Village.

Queen's Terrace doesn't seem to exist anymore, but I could take photos of 11 Royal Parade and hopefully 2 Alfred Place, Walnut Tree Road, if you like (send me a PM with your email address).

I keep being drawn back to this ;D

I can probably also take a picture of the school in Park Place (now Park Vista), Greenwich.  A description of the road can be found here:

A description of Royal Parade can be found here:

This is an ariel shot of Royal Parade.  It is a single row of shops overlooking the heath.

In 1881, Jesse's older brother, George, was a dairyman employing 1 boy and was living with wife and baby in Stockwell St. Greenwich, which is right in the centre of Greenwich, near the park.

Hi Dimps

Yes I will PM you with my email address. Thanks for all your help. Will forward the pics onto Jesse's daughter. I went through all the censuses last night on Ancestry and sent her a huge email with all the info, including the info from the Gazettes. So anything else is a bonus really.

I couldn't find a reference to Jesse marrying Harriet on the normal freebmd site, but will take a look tonight on 1837online. I must try to find her in Scotland, as she says she is born there on 1901 and I have not had much sucess in finding her. Plus, in 1901 their two eldest children George and Violet are both born before the wedding date of 1895 in Croydon of Jesse Rhodes and Harriett Currie Allen. But I have not had any sucess in finding them registered under her name or Rhodes. This family really is a challenge!!!

Thanks guys!

Alex

re: 86 Ingrave Street. - if you search for 86 Ingrave you find an E. Rhodes there in 1942, 86 Ingrave Street Battersea, lately carrying on business or residing at Park Farm, Royston Road, Ashwell in Hertford.  (Bankruptcy proceedings again!).  Occupation listed as 'dealer'.

30 Mar 1943 has:

Rhodes, Albert (described in the recieving order as E. Rhodes), and also known as E. Wilson, J. Allan, B. Allan, and E. Green, 86 Ingrave Street, and lately carrying out business or residing at Park Farm, Royston Road, Ashwell in the county of Hertfordshire.  This might be the son of Jesse, Albert who is aged 2 in 1901?
