I've just been in contact with a very nice and helpful person from the 'proper' Spoad family.  The person seems very posh and has an extremely posh three barrelled name - but I just had to share this and I quote

"The connection I have between the Spodes and the Whieldons was in the wealthiest part of society.  But as the potter Josiah Spode the 1.  came from a very poor background you might be related rather closely to him after all."

I'm sure the intention wasn't to make me feel as if I should tip my cap or get back in the gutter where I belong but it has made me laugh!!!!!!

Wouldn't it just be rather jolly if I was related  ;)

It would be great to see some one link up to Spode etc.  Mine are all ag labs and farmers though one or too became railway workers or platelayers, the odd one had a samll acre or so of land and a house, but no big relatives of famous people yet,  Perhaps I will find a knight in 1066 or Domesday book.  Only one acnestor was a local publican and ferryman!

Hi runner

Probably but it was in 1750's in Yorkshire and the funny think was the son died from falling from his horse and cart while drunk and on his way home!

John, are we related as that sure sounds like one of mine  ?

I have got a lot of research to do with the Spodes but I do think I may be a very poor relation linked in there somewhere.  It's just too much of a coincidence that a wealthy Spode married a Wheildon and I have a poor Spode marrying a poor Wheeldon.

I feel a Catherine Cookson style novel coming on - or perhaps a film even!  Forget Ghost and think of -

The potter and the pig farmer!

Hi Fiona,

Did you ever find the Wheeldon-Spode connection?

My gr-gr-gr-grandfather's brother George Whieldon in 1809 married Saba Spode; they are the couple that 'the posh Spode' was referring to as the wealthy one. But George's father came from very modest origins

Please contact me; You can see my Whieldon family tree here:

Ulrich
Whieldon, Wheeldon, Wheildon etc. all over (originates from Staffordshire), Turner of Middlesex, Pugh of Shropshire, Santer of Sussex, Cobley of London and Bill or Farley Hall, Staffordshire.
My family moved around a lot, so most aren't just in one county.
