Lewes Workhouse
« on: Friday 10 September 04 23:05 BST (UK) »
What are my chances of finding out why four of my lot were in Lewes Workhouse during the 1881 census?

They were four brothers, aged between 5 and 15. Their sister is living with their grandmother, their father is listed as a visiter in Cambridge and their mother is nowhere to be found.

Any suggestions?

Amy

I believe some of the records for the Lewes Workhouse are kept at the East Sussex Records Office.

This seems to be an unusual case, but first thoughts are they have been abandoned by their parent.

Somewhere I have a list of Workhouse records that they have in the archive - now, if only I can put my finger on it

Thanks Chris,
Just for the record, I emailed ESRO and they don't have any admission or discharge registers for the Lewes workhouse.

 :(

I'm just going to have to make an educated guess or use my imagination
