Dixon / Dickson / Wallace
« on: Saturday 31 December 05 14:59 GMT (UK) »
Would much appreciate contact with anyone having information concerning the family of -

Samuel Dixon, born 1784, Kilmore, County Mayo. At some point Samuel married Sarah Wallace (b.1789) probably born somewhere in Ireland. Sarah Wallace may not, however, have been his first wife. Samuel had a son James, born 1810, perhaps in Dublin but Sarah Wallace may not have been his mother.

In 1813 Samuel joined the 47th (Lancashire) Regiment of Foot. He served in England, briefly in France, and then in India from 1816 until 1829. Samuel's son James did not travel to India with him, and it is not clear if Sarah Wallace travelled with him, or if he married her in India.

Samuel and Sarah (Wallace) Dixon had three children born at Poona & Fort St. George, India; Jane (b.1821), Susannah (b.1823) and Sarah Charlotte (b.1824) ... Susannah died as an infant. On the return voyage they had a son, John William (b.1829), aboard ship off St. Helena.

The Dixon family emigrated to Canada in 1831/32. They seem to have followed Samuel's eldest son James (b.1810) who apparently emigrated at some early date, to Lanark County, Ontario.
