1851/1861 census for JOHN SMITH !!
« on: Sunday 08 January 06 16:42 GMT (UK) »
Yes folks I know what you're thinking - she's got to be joking with a name like that!!
I know it's a long shot but I'm wondering if there is some crazy person out there who likes a challenge??
My gt.gt.gt. grandfather John Smith was born in Surfleet c1785 and married a Sarah Fairchild also from Surfleet.
I do have his name on his son's marriage certificate and he is down as being a grover (least I don't think it's a grocer but it's a little hard to read )I was just wondering if he's mentioned in the 1851 or 1861 census and what is down for his occupation.
Realize this is probabely a ridiculous request, but thought it was worth a try

OK - Call me one ancestor short of a tree I can take it lol.

On the 1851 census there are only 4 J & S Smith's born in Lincolnshire with his DOB being either 1793 Louth, 1790 Branston, 1778 Bettes? & 1789Billinghay.

Are you sure they are both still alive by 1851?

DOB's are round up by upto 5 years in the 1851 census plus allow for poor memory's

GG
Dawes - Surrey / Hampshire
Hibbard - Leckford
Coles - Portsea
King - Devon
Terlour - Falmouth
Sheaff - Folkestone area
Peachey - Gosport
Roche - Cork Shandon
Martin - Limerick
McCarthy - Cork
Edmunds - Bishops Waltham
Bird - Gloucester
Bicknell - Farnham

???

Ages are (in theory) correct in 1851 but were supposedly rounded DOWN in 1841.

I'm afraid the references on the IGI for John born c1785 and Sarah c1789 are total fabrications.  The only facts are the date and place of marriage.  The dates are just assumptions based on possible ages of 25 and 21 at marriage.  There is no basis to assume they were both from Surfleet just because they married there.

The mystery birthplace in Genegenee's post is (I think) Bottesford which is far away near Scunthorpe.

Another possible occupation would be Drover.

Well I didn't expect any replies to my ridiculous request, but many thanks to you all. At least I now have some siblings for Edward.
By the way I have a photograph of the said Edward and he looks a formidable figure !!
Many Thanks again
