south african railways

Does anyone know of any web sites that are connected to the railways in South Africa. I have an ancestor who I think went to South Africa in the 1860's to 1870's from Newport Wales, I dont know exactly when or what ship he went on, so my search is very difficult. Ive looked at some of the rootChat recommended sites for South Africa, but am stuck as I have so little info to start with. But I am pretty sure he was building railways whilst out there. Any ideas??

Hi there. My ancestors name was Edwin James Thackwell, born 1833 Newport Wales. He may have gone to South Africa between 1860 and 1880 with his wife Elizabeth 'Susannah' and his children Edwin James, Susannah and Thomas Joseph. He worked on the railways, but died back in Manchester in 1884. He did not appear on any census since 1851. Any ideas? Thanks.
