Hi everyone,

Apparently www.ancestry.com has launched their Canadian Records.  They say they have the "first" fully indexed 1911 census on-line, plus all kinds of other stuff.

Karen,

Just my two cents (and they're worth even less than that, if you convert from Canadian dollars to British pounds).  ; )

I like ancestry.com but I wouldn't pay to access records that are offered for free by the Canadian government.  For the 1911 census, I'll wait until the volunteers at Automated Genealogy are finishing transcribing it for free.  Before the 1901 census was transcribed, I spent hours viewing the pages for free on the Canadian government website.

I'm lucky, though, because I already know where most of my Canadians were (or should have been) in 1911.  However, I'm very disappointed that the originals were photographed so poorly.  I can't see any names in the district where my great-grandparents and great-uncles were living:  the microflim is all black.

Regards,
Josephine

Hi Josephine,

I agree with you, but if you already have a subsription to ancestry, then it's a bonus to get the 1911, plus they also have the Ontario indexes as well, which you can also view for free at the library, but sometimes it's easier to sneak in on the computer to search after all the kids are sleeping.  ;)

1869-1907 Ontario Birth Index
1858-1889 Ontario Marriage Index
1869-1932 Ontario Death Index

Karen,

I see your point and agree.  Those indexes look good!

Well - I must say - being in Canada, that I did upgrade from my UK membership to a World membership to get the Canadian records.  I have found it very time saving, and a pleasant surprise was you get to actually see the record for the birth and death indexes that is held on microfilm at the archives.  I actually upgraded last friday - when they were released, and have found a few great things, esp children who died between the censuses......

I am willing to do some lookups on the canaidan indexes.    Let me know.....

Hi Tom,

That's great.  I'm going to get the CDN subscription for the month as well, so if anyone wants anylooks up done let me know.  $15.00 seems pretty cheap when you factor in gas and especially when it costs $20.00 to park at the Ontario Archives.  :)
