Brixey, Bryant, Curtis, Goater, Huxford, Read, Rogers, Henning, Welch
« on: Wednesday 01 February 06 12:08 GMT (UK) »
These are the names I am interested in in Hampshire. At the moment I would like to know more about Henning families in Southampton(William b.1834) and Lymington(Ann b.1805) and Rogers families in Mottisfont (Catherine b.1840).
Any help much appreciated.

Many thanks Tanja, that's great!
The response I've had today encourages me to ask if anyone can scale the brickwall I have with my grandmother who was Hilda May Fox and lived with my granddad Horace Benjamin Goater in Southampton c1911. Where did she come from?!

Err... good question  ;D

Anything else to go on? Did she marry Horace? If so, do you have the cert?

Um...good question too. Allegedly she did but I haven't got a cert. and there is some doubt. She died in 1917 and there is a record of the death of Hilda M Goater in Hull(?) aged 38. The age makes sense since Horace was born in 1875 but the location? Her husband was away fighting in France and was killed the following year.

:-\  :-\ I can see one Hilda M Fox of the right age in Hampshire in 1891 as follows:
RG12/879 128 16
Alverstoke Ann's Hill Hampshire
1 Ottawa Terrace

Henry John Fox, head, 44, House painter
Harriet, wife, 42
Albert E, son, 17, Shoeing smith apprentice
Olive L, dau, 14, Dressmaker Apprentice
Hilda M, dau, 11, scholar
George H, son, 5, scholar

Everybody born Alverstoke.

She's the nearest match that I can see. However there are 2 other Hilda M's, both age 9, one in Leicestershire and one in Lincolnshire. (Plus any others that I may not have found...). Needless to say I have no proof that any of these three is actually a Hilda May

I also see one Hilda May Fox marrying in Hampshire (Portsea Island) in June 1898 which could be the above. Spouse either William James Harkin or George Stratton. Makes me think she could have been widowed and married under a different name?

Well, only suppositions, I'm afraid...

Thanks Tanja,
I believe I looked for a Hilda Stratton or Hilda Harkin in the 1901 census without success so this does appear to be a possibility. Horace worked as a travelling salesman so the others are in the frame though family legend has it she worked as a local barmaid.
The wall remains intact but not for want of trying!
Thanks again,
Phil

Hiya,
I have a Charles Curtis married to Mary Baby at Bramshaw, Hants in 1826 (they had at least seven children, including my 2xggrandma Harriet).  Charles Curtis was born in Downton, Wiltshire and I have a further three generations back from him.  Any connection with your Curtises??
