Ian

The Harper Hospital is in the same vecinity as your 1861 Emma - St Paul Bedford.

There's also a George Gray born 1812 Eaton Bedford widower with daughter Eliza born 1840 Bedford in the 1851 census. Could be Dad & sister?!?!

Hi Ian

I did find the her birth on the IGI with parents George Gray & Eliza. Also found a Julia Gray born 20 APR 1844  & christened at same place as Emma, & with same parents. On 1851 census found Julia Gray b 1844 Bedford living at Alms Houses Dame Alice Street Bedford as grand-daughter of Mary White age 79 Widow born Shellington (or Shillington) Beds,

Hello Heidi & John
I think but not to sure that george may be from Meppershall. born 1814
as in the IGI there is a george gray born 1814 to John Gray and Mary which would be Julia gray`s grandaughter.
the only differance is that she has changed colour from gray to white !?

Right that makes sense, so mary white must be eliza`s mother ! who is living at the alms house.
Well thank you, that has made a great start on tracing my  Gt Gt Grandmothers side of the family.

Ian

I found this via 'google'

http://www.oldtowns.co.uk/Bedfordshire/bedford.htm

Towards the end of the text it contains a description of the hospital, being a Harpur charity establishment for poor children.

"Besides which, the girls in the hospital for poor children, another branch of the charity, are taught household duties, needle-work, reading and writing, by the mistress."
