On 1851 census there is George Gray b 1815 Meppershall who has wife Louisa age 33 b Pulloxhill Beds, with family. However it seems this is not who you're after.

Thank you for all of that info, i gather that the gray family were very poor.
John i noticed that in 1861 census i looked up for george and looking at the original census it says George and Louisa, yet when you look at the household it says George and Eliza If you look at RG9 997 pg 16 on the 1837 website and then look at household it gives you 2 differant names.

On 1861 RG9/997 page 16 census image - is the George Grey & wife Louisa living at Meppershall - as I found on the 1851.

But assuming the enumurator did not know how to spell Gray/Grey ???

there's a George GREY age 49 / Widower born Bushmead Beds living at 61 Allhallows Lane Bedford - just round corner to Harpur Street & Dame Alice Street. He is a Tailor & Clothier.

Need to find out if wife Eliza died between 1844 & 1851 ?

Also someone to do the 1841 census lookup for George & Eliza.

regards John

Census
1851 St Paul's Bedford
George Gray born Eaton Socon, Bushmead, Bedford 1812 - Draper
Eliza Gray Daughter born Bedford 1840

1861 St Paul's Bedford
George Gray born Eaton Socon, Bushmead, Bedford 1812 - Tailor & Clothier

1871 St Paul's Bedford
George Gray born Eaton Socon, Bushmead, Bedford 1812 - Tailor

1881 13 Green Hill St ST paul's Bedford
George Grey born (as above) 1812 - Tailor

1891 St Paul's Bedford
George (GRACE - incorrect transcription) Gray born as above - Tailor
Eliza Gray daughter unmarried born Bedford 1840

George Gray died 1892 March ¼ Bedford vol 3b p261

1901 Broomfield St Paul, Bedford
Eliza (GADY - incorrect transcription) Gray Head born 1840 Bedford unmarried living on own means
Julia (GADY - incorrect transcription) Gray sister born 1845 Bedford unmarried living on own means

Eliza Gray died 1906 March ¼ Bedford vol 3b p191

Looks like this could be your George Gray from Julia's return to the fold in 1901 census.

Couldn't locate Eliza in 1861, 1871, 1881 yet and Julia has only appeared in 1851, 1861 so far.

Good luck

Right so the george Grey of Meppershall is NOT my george !
but the george of Eaton Socon is and a tailor and cutter.

looking on the free bmd site there is 2 eliza gray`s who died between 1847 and 1851 in Bedford.

So i know i sound daft here but this can be confusing  :o we still asume that george married an eliza white ? in 1839 bedford.

Hi there,

Looks like George and Eliza White married in 1839 and had 3 girls for sure.
Eliza (1840), Emma Louisa (1842) and Julia (1845). ALthough george lived to a ripe old age Eliza did not. I guess one of those death records would confirm this by address and husband. My GG grandmother died at 25 years old of cancer leaving a 3 & 5 year old who ended up being raised by their maternal grandmother. Now that caused great confusion for a while.

The only problem about getting confirmation of Emma's family is the expense involved in ordering random certificates.

By the way have you got the census details for Emma and Benjamin and their children?

Thank you Heidi,
I have the census for 1871 & 91 for Benjamin & Emma Gibson.
This has all happend due to a picture turning up of a wedding which includes both Benjamin and Emma ! which was also in the newspaper with a list of all guests and there presents that was given, and some presents such as Silverware, blankets, lace, in fact i would of said a wealthy wedding. even the wedding dress was of silk and lace ! and lots of it.
So the family has wondered who Emma was.
And it all falls on me to try and find out.

Well i will have to pick on one name and hope for the best unless i can find anyone else doing the same research.

I dont have Benjamin before 1871 yet although i think i have most of his family who was Andrew Gibson from Denton, Northants.
Regards Ian Markie
