Schoolmaster and Tax Collector
« on: Sunday 05 February 06 12:02 GMT (UK) »
Whilst looking through the 1871 Census I notice that my G.Grandfather Richard Dudley , born 1822 at Chemarsh . His work was shown in the Census as Schoolmaster and Tax Collector. Can anyone through any light on what type of Taxes he would be collecting and for whom would he be working. He was schoolmaster at Erdington School, Bridgenorth and living with his family in Erdington School house at the time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi Eric,
You said "my G.Grandfather Richard Dudley, born 1822 at Chelmarsh"

Was he the son of Richard & Sarah, a Tailor, also born at Chelmarsh?
If so, I have the family for you on the 1841 and 1851 Bridgnorth census.

Hope it helps,
Gwynne Chadwick.

I have been quite curiouse as to what taxes he would be collecting and who would he be collecting them for. any back ground info you have on the family would be most welcome. Thanking you. Eric.
