John Baird - 1811 - New Brunswick
« on: Sunday 05 February 06 20:47 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a John Baird who possably set sail for Canada from Maryport or a nearby port sometime from Jan 10 1811 to 7 Feb 1811.
It's the only connection I have back to England.

He may have been listed as the Captain of the brig Betsy sailing out of Maryport about the same time.
Records shows he worked for W. Smith and Co. in 1811 (when the record of employment was filed is unknown to me)

He may have been the same John Baird who married Mary Barnes in St. Marys, Carlisle on 09 Jan 1811.
Listed in the parish register, Church of England. St. Mary's Church (Carlisle, Cumberland)

Canadian records from 1809 to 1813 are virtually non-existent.
The ship may have landed in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick.

Ships record may also show a birth of a boy to Mary on 8 Feb.

Were there records kept of these ships departing, are there passanger lists and where can I find them?

Suggest looking here: http://www.immigrantships.net/

Also we do have database resources, although not a lot within that time frame...
go above to the main board, hit immigrants to canada, and see the child board
"CANADA RESOURCES" It's tough to find something in there, but some have had
 successes... Best of luck! J.J.

Allot of good resources but most don't go back far enough when it comes to the Atlantic Provinces.  There is several gaps in the maritime records due to fires in Halifax.  And like Great Britain, keeping of records did not become law till the mid 1800's

PS
Had a good look at your web page, "Always Remember", very nice.

One of the first ones I tried along time ago.
It came back with only 5 and none were John.

I think I've finally hit a brick wall.

I am actually confused as to where your ancestor ended up....I realize that you wanted a certain trip to Canada...but it sounds as though he is captaining the ship. Did he ever remain in Canada? What year born?

Sorry for the confusion,
John Baird was a Captain of a ship prior to emigrating to Canada. (passed on through the family)
I believe he became a farmer in or around Upham NB.
The only ship I could find was the Betsy out of Maryport who's master was a J. Baird.
His son's marriage records don't exist anymore so there is very little to go on.
In Carlisle there was a marriage of a John Baird to Mary Barnes.
If I can track their movements, i.e. was Mary 8 mo pregnant, was there a musket to a head, were they run out of town?  If they were run out, the easiest way would have been a ship from one of the small nearby ports to a major one and then to Canada.
If I can find out anything on this J Baird or John and Mary, it may give some more clues to act on.

I take it that you have a name for the baby? If it was born at sea, it may also be on a list somewhere. ( and maybe not)  Where did they come from and what else do you know....Asking because this is a very popular site, and every bit of information that you put on here becomes searchable by other descendants
who are also searching. Sometimes connections can be made that way also, over time! So I'll  point out that dates of birth are missing, should anyone ever come across the name on a ship's list there are numerous John Bairds....an age would be helpful :D

I think that I was rude and forgot to welcome you to rootschat. WELCOME
In the meantime...While you wait for someone with some news of your family...
there are many boards here in rootschat on which to pose other questions, say back in the originating homeland...

J.J.

You haven't been rude, I've been off and on since May.

The child's name was William Barnes Baird.  We have no idea were his father came from.
We found Williams grave marker:

KI2M-003 = UPHAM PARISH - Upham St Peter's Anglican Cemetery
Located in churchyard in village of Upham. Compiled by Ernest Friars, 1980.
BAIRD:
04: Ann J. d. Sep 1870 ae 15 yrs 7 mos
Isabella d. Mar 1861 ae 11 yrs 7 mos
Infant daughter d. Jun 1866
Children of William & S. A. [....]
{sunk in ground - probably Baird}
05: William Baird d. Jun 1897 ae 86 yrs
wife, Sarah Ann d. Jan 1907 ae 90 yrs
06: Ella Annette Baird 1901 - 1971 {nee Fletcher}
Erected by daughter and son-in-law
Marian & Frank Allaby and family
59: E. Annette - see FLETCHER

I found Sarah Ann's death record in the NB government archive.
I've attached a pdf file of all the info I was able to collect on William's children.
As you can see I have very little to go on and my hunch is all I have.

I posted the original message on the Cunberland board.  Audery who lives in the area has some books on ships from Maryport and is willing to dig through them to see what she can find.  I'm not sure were the parish records are held.  If they are in the local area maybe I can get her to do a little snooping around for me.
