In 1891 he lived with his parents.

Hi
I think the wife's place of birth was Penrith - that's what it looks like.  It is in Cumberland but is close to Appleby.  I have not yet found them in 1881 but in 1871 John was with his parents RG10 5269 F56 p15.

In "Appleby at Work, a Historic Directory" there is an entry "MARTINDALE (John) Painter, Photographer (John Hayes) Trading as:"

Looking under Painter gives
John Martindale, Bongate 1873-85
Market Pl 1884

Photographer gives
John Martindale, Battlebarrow 1858

The dates show  which directory they appeared in.
Hope this helps.
I am frequently on holiday in that area if you need photos of houses etc.
Andrea

Hi

I would agree with Annie's place of birth being Penrith ;)

Also, in short, I've failed to find Frederick b1875 in the 1881 Census. :( :( :(

The long version  ;D ;D is:

1881  RG11/5198  folio63 p35 Appleby
Fred's father John H Martindale with wife Annie & daus Alice J & Elizabeth A; no Frederick

1881 RG11/5198  folio51 p11  Appleby
John's father John H Martindale with wife Mary & children Hannah, Anne, Florence, William & 3 visitors; no sign of Frederick staying with grandparents

1881 - no other Martindales obvious in Appleby by searching, though I haven't browsed every image  ;)

1881 - tried a good range of variations for searching on first name only/last name only/wild cards, but no Fred spotted!

I also checked out Annie Martindale's birth family....

I found a Westmorland marriage for John H Martindale to Annie Williamson Q1 1875 East Ward vol 10b p881

.... so looked for Williamsons of Penrith. I found a likely family in 1861 & 1871, but cannot find them in 1881 >:( ::) :o

Sorry I couldn't help more - if you don't have details for some of the census stuff given above, I would be happy to supply it :D

cheers
Rosemary

Rosemary

Thanks for the info on the marriage  of John H. And yes, details of the Williamsons in 1861 and 1871 would be useful.

Thanks again for all your help.

Bob

Hi, I have only just seen your post, but Frederic appears on the 1881 census as Frederick Williamson living with his grandmother Ann Williamson at 19 Middlegate Penrith. What is your interest in him and do you know when he died?

Hi
It's not often I receive a reply to a 10 year old post. Frederick Martindale was the Grandfather of my wife. He lived in Thorne nr Doncaster and died 1964 (I will have to look up the exact date if you want it)  His wife Sarah (2nd wife) died 1975. if you require more info I will dig it out for you.

Hi Bob
Thanks for that. Yes I would be interested in any information you have about him. Do you have any photos? He is my great grandfather. My grandmother was Annie Martindale, his daughter to his first marriage to Sarah Barraclough. When she was alive she told me may a story about him and recalled in specific detail the day he left the family for who is presumably your wife's grandmother. She recalled that after they separated he used to have access to her and her sister but then moved to Liverpool (she thought) and then she didn't seem able to recall any more about him. I have been up to Appleby and seen the area and traced his family back as I can but I would love to know more about him and what he got up to after my gran lost contact with him. He remains my favourite ancestor! She told me that he was from Scotland (which he wasn't) but I did find on a census (I think 1901) that he declared himself to be Scottish, clearly had ideas about himself!

Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you
Sharon

Hi Sharon

I'm away in Norfolk for a few days. Will sort info for you when I get back. If you let me have your email that may be easier.
