Age of marriage witnesses
« on: Wednesday 29 September 04 17:11 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know what, if any, the minimum ages for witnesses to a marriage in the eighteenth century England would have been?

Thanks

The only requirement was that the clergyman should be satisfied that the witnesses were capable of understanding the proceedings and attesting thereto.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.
