Can I link to a photo?
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 10:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello, this is my first post, so go easy on me thanks! :)

I have an old photo that I would love to date and get info on from all you experts out there! (there is a distinctive hat in it). Unfortunately it is a copy of a poor image and probably would be an awful quality if I loaded it in this site with its 300kb limit. Is it ok to link to sites like imageshack etc? Or can I post it some other way?

Any help appreciated, Mark.

Thanks very much, I've posted the link below. The image came from a cousin in the US and she is not sure where it has come from. But we believe them to be Jeromes and the photo was taken in Portsmouth. If someone could put an approximate date to it, that would be great. Also the old chap, with beard and a little girl (or boy) on his lap has a distinctive hat, does anyone recognise the design?

hi, had a look, i'm not an expert by any means, but it looks middle to late victorian to me, 1880ish?.
by the way there is an image resizer tool which is a freeware programme, which reduces the size of photo's, 700mb down to about 80 without drastically affecting quality, helps when uploading as it is then a small file, just google image resizer, worth a try

Thanks for that Sharon, I'm obviously going to have to learn a bit more about posting on this forum.  :)

I reckon the picture dates from the 1890's (but I'm not usually good at these) do you have any idea as to the name (even surname of either of the couple in the middle) as it is a wedding photo, if you could find out that you would have your date. There were quite a few marriages of Jerome's between 1890 and 1900 in Portsea (the pre 1900 name for Portsmouth)

I don't I'm afraid. The two boys in the top right of the photo do bear a resemblance to a photo I have of my great grandfather taken in the late 1890's. So I am 99% sure it is of immediate family. I didn't realize it was a wedding photo, so that helps. I was really hoping to identify the hat the old man was wearing, that might lead to other things.

Hi Mark
It certainly looks like a starfish on the front - do you have any nautical ancestors?
He also appears to be the bride's father as he's sitting next to her.
