Can you help trace Arthur Bough?
« on: Monday 27 February 06 21:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello all, Arthur Bough born Steyning, Sussex  UK, Jan 11th 1896, to Emma Bough. He was sent to Toronto from Dr Barnardos childrens home age 10 in 1906.

He was working as a farm labourer at Jordan Station, Lincoln County, Ontario until 1916 when he enlisted in WW1, I can find no records that he was killed during the War, but have no idea what happened to him afterwards.....

Did he return to Canada? was this usual?

Can anyone locate any info regarding his whereabouts after the war or point me in the right direction?!I can find no record of him being in UK.

I'm stuck now!

Thanks!

Hi Sallie,

That's a tough one.  He would have been over 20 when he left the war and therefore could do as he pleased.  If he was treated well while he was in Canada, he may have wanted to come back, but alot of them did not have it easy.

You could order his full military records and that may have some clues in it.

Huck - Alsace, France
Reinhart - Baden, Germany
Bowman & Ellis - England
Etheridge - Gloucestershire

Who all came to Canada in a little row boat, clap clap, clap your hands!!

Just as a side note, I am currently reading a book called "The Little Immigrants" and in it says,

"Hobday reported that during the war, 6,211 Barnardo boys from Canada had joined the services, of whom 514 had been killed in action."

Hello

there is a listing for an Arthur Bough, age 74, who died on July 12, 1970 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The reg # is 1970-09-009994 and the Microfilm # is B13304   (GSU # 2034212). These records are free for public viewing but as you aren't in Vancouver I would suggest that you send a request to a volunteer on the below site. There are many helpful people listed all around the world who are able to go and get  info for you. The death registration would list birthplace, next of kin, etc. Also ask for an obit if there is one.

Also from this site (which I don't have a subscription to yet) there is a mention of an Arthur Bough who married in 1920.

Have you checked out the website for British Homechildren and the mailing list for it? They may be able to assist or point you in some helpful directions.

Here is a link to a mailing list message that lists the arrival of Arthur Bough in Canada (his ship actually arrived in Maine)

Best of luck and I will let you know if I think of anything else.
