Red Burn Row?
« on: Monday 11 October 04 15:24 BST (UK) »
I am trying to link a Joseph Allen said to have been born in Red Burn (or Barn) Row, Houghton-le-Spring,  c1830, with my great-great-grandfather Joseph Allen, also born c1830, but his birthplace is given as: Cross Fence(?).

This Joseph's wife and children's birth place is given as Morton Engine  (1861 Census) so I feel perhaps Cross Fence is also in that area.

Can anyone tell me where anyof these places are/were and if perhaps the two Joseph's could possibly be the same person.   ???

Hello, yes, the Joseph Allen in the 1861 census was the father of my ancestor Stephen Henry Allen, who was my grandmother's father.

I have the James Allen family in 1841 in Colliery Row as follows:

Allen, James, 50, Coalminer,   Yes (born in the county)
Allen, Jane,    50,                    Yes
Allen, Francis, 30, Coalminer,   Yes
Allen, James,   20, Coalminer,   Yes
Allen, Ann,      14,                    Yes
Allen, Joseph,  12,                    Yes
Allen, Jane,     10,                    Yes
Allen, John,      8,                     Yes
Lamb, John,    70, Coalminer,    Yes

Very little information was included in 1841.  Relationships and marriage status are not included on the census.
The details are from   HO 107 / 312 /12  Houghton ED5

I don't know whether this is of any help.

Can any one let me know if this Allen family was related to a Thomas Allen of Houghton Le Spring who had at least one child called Benjamin Allen whose children were ..... Edward, Emily, Thomas, Stephen, Elsie, May and Aurther Allen. Emily's second marriage was to my Great Grandfather a Duncan Carmichael Yeoman. Im desperate to find a photo of Emily and Duncan. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks x
