Hi Carol. Various members have posted excellent guides to starting family history.
I suggest you take a look at this:
http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=3996.msg1926#msg1926

Also, as Will has pointed out if you can buy this week's Radio Times or TV Times there is a wonderful pull-out guide to starting research - and a programme on BBC 2 TV tonight at 9pm.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Kathy

I'd be grateful if you would post some basic guidelines for finding records post 1901 as it is in this area that I am having greatest difficulty in filling in my family tree. Between 1900 and 1700, there are gaps, but post 1900, there are huge chasms!

Thanks
Nick

I find that if I have a rough idea of the birth date and know where they were born (and hopefully not too common a name)...then I use the 1837online website......it is worth the money..especially now they have improved the search facility.

Also, one thing I have found invaluable is to join the family history society which covers the area....

I am a member of three  (in Norfolk, Lancashire  and Yorkshire)

My local one, Morley - has meetings once a month & we do transcriptions of the local parish records, etc.  Also, we have access to the library with local newspapers.....we have even done an index of bmd announcements in the local paper...which are fairly modern.
You may find another member researching the same names - or through the magazine find some-one who will help you research locally....

Best of all - keep using this website !
