Hi there,
When I am trying to find siblngs for pre-1855, I tend to use the OPR births search on Scotlands People. I put in the surname that I am looking for (checking the soundex box as well, just in case) and then put in the names of the parents (only the OPR births allow you to do this, not the statutory ones
). I usually then pick a range of years either side of the known birth and pick the parish that I am most interested in and see what I get. It only costs 1 credit to view the results and it has been well worth it in the past for me.
In the example that you have given, I did the following...
First - I tried to find the birth of John Wood to give me the parish in which to search, in this case Eccles.
Then to find the siblings:
Enter the surname Wood
Enter parent name 'James Wood'
Year range 1800 to 1820.
Selected parish of Eccles
These brought back the same as Audrey and Monica's searches. I couldn't find any others if extending the search to all of Scotland.
If you think that there should be more siblings than that, it might be worth searching in the north of England as well, as Eccles is fairly close to the border. Depending on what James Wood did for a living, his work may have taken him across and back sometimes (I have this in my family with ag labs and shepherds).
Cheers,
Clare
