Northwich Poor Law Union Workhouse
« on: Sunday 16 April 06 14:38 BST (UK) »
Hi all!!

I wonder if anyone can settle a mystery for me?  I have a great grandmother who died "allegedly" at the workhouse in 1935.  I obtained a copy of the death certificate and it shows that death occurred at 160a London Road, Northwich.  Now the present number of the Salt Museum, which now occupies the former main building, is 162 London Road.  The first terraced house towards the viaduct (Northwich direction) is presently numbered 160.

I have a theory that there must have been a separate isolation building or similar hospital block between the terraced houses and the workhouse main building, and it is that which was perhaps 160a London Road?  A map I have of the site in 1908 seems to show such a separate building.

But does anyone know if this really was the case?  Exactly where was 160a London Road, and what was this building?  Any light which anyone can shed on this would be most appreciated.

Hi, Gary, The Salt Musuem was the Northwich Union Workhouse.  I remember buildings at the back of the workhouse which were demolished in the ??? late 1950's and replaced with a county council elderly persons home   There must be someone 'out there' that can remember further back than me.  If not the Salt Museum may be able to help or Northwich Library.

Hi Garry

Just wondered if you ever solved your mystery.  I have just received a birth certificate which shows that the birth took place at 160a London Road, Northwich, and the address given by the mother was the same.

Hi, TerriG. I can confirm that further to my previous replies to Garry, that 106a London Road was actually the workhouse.  In 1911 it shows not only a Master and Matron, but nurses. Often to avoid the stigma of being born in the workhouse the address was given to ease future issues for the 'inmates and children born there'.

Thanks kathb.

Do you happen to know what it means when a workhouse record on familysearch comes up with "Religious Creeds" as an event?

Hi

I am currently researching this workhouse and would very much like to hear from anyone who has details of members of staff, inmates, members of the Board of Guardians, relieving officers etc. To date I have the names of the Masters and Matrons from the opening of the workhouse to the 1920s, some details of other staff members and of a few inmates, as well some Board of Guardian members and relieving officers. Any information that people would be willing to share would be much appreciated.
