Thanks, I did see that previously. However, the last name is AYLWIN which is a distinct surname with many family lines in West Sussex--usually in the same parish as Ayling. It could be that the clerk wrote the last name down wrong in error. However, you can see Thomas in 1768 is AYLWIN as well. Then in 1775 you have a John and Ann AYLING having a son Thomas. Same couple?
I was hoping the transcriptions would help me tease it out rather than go through the originals. In other words, if I find mostly AYLINGs here (marriages and burials too) then I would be inclined to accept that AYLWIN here is in error.

The Aylwyn versus Aylynge names caused me a lot of grief early on in my researches. See for example, Stedham parish http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.ayling/158/mb.ashx. When parish records were directed to be transcribed from paper to parchment in the early 1600's that names were used interchangeably even within family groups. I had to go to Wills, BT and other sources to sort out the two.

The following children are baptized to John & Mary AYLWIN in Houghton:

John 1748
William 1750
George 1753
Mary 1756
Henry 1762
Hannah 1765
Thomas 1768

The following children are baptized to John & Ann AYLWIN in Houghton:

John 1773

The following children are baptized to John & Ann AYLING in Houghton:

Thomas 1775
William 1779

Houghton burial records for some of the above include the following:

Thomas Ayling 1824 age 56 (B. 1768)
Henry Ayling 1826 age 63 (B. 1763)
John Ayling 1827 age 79 (B. 1748)

I don't see any AYLWIN burials in the time frame of the above expected lifespans. Were these all supposed to be AYLING? Seems likely that John & Mary were the parents of John (Ann).
