Hi Sarah

Maybe you have already come across this?  On this German Genealogy based website, a man named SCHARPEY from Essen-Werden has posted a message saying in effect, and somewhat tongue-in-cheek,  that he never ceases to be astounded that whenever he googles "SCHARPEY" he gets no results!
http://www.aejc.de/index.html?http://www.aejc.de/kon/gbarchiv.htm
he also pops up here:

Did her marriage to William record the name of her father?

Cheers

Yes.  His name was Ernest.  I am corresponding with Markus (the Scharpey in question) and am waiting for him to get back to me.  He is going to ask his father for details.  Have also contacted Essen Records Office and am waiting to here back from them too.

Markus says there are only 10 Scharpey's  in the phone book and 8 of them are in Essen.  Apparently people in Germany don't tend to move around that much so I hope I am onto something here!
